Up-to-date map of NCAA DIII Men's Ice Hockey

You can find the map here.

I intend to update it next season to reflect Aurora joining the NCHA, Daniel Webster and Endicott joining the ECAC-NE, and Western Connecticut joining the MASCAC (and to update Endicott's marker once their rink exists).

A couple observations:

1. Interesting juxtaposition: SUNY Canton's rink is so new it doesn't exist on the satellite images, but MN-Crookston's rink was demolished long enough ago that it is gone from the satellite images.

2. What a wide variety in distances between campus and rink. Obviously, some colleges have on-campus rinks, but others have quite a long distance to commute. A surprisingly large number of colleges play at rinks on high school or prep school campuses, especially in New England.

Also, if there are any former DIII teams I've missed (I'm sure there are), please let me know so I can add them!

I don't think Daniel Webster was accepted into the ECAC-NE.

If you're including former D3's (I see Union); Niagara, Canisius, RIT and several other now-D1's need to be included.

There were several DI schools who used to "play down" to DIII, until the NCAA said no (aka Atlantic Hockey).

Nicely done!

I hate being this guy, but you omitted the "b" in Daniel Webster.

Re: Up-to-date map of NCAA DIII Men's Ice Hockey

Updated!

Changes I've made:

-Corrected the spelling of Daniel Webster College

-Added UW-LaCrosse, SUNY Binghamton, AIC, Mercyhurst, MSU-Mankato, Bemidji State, Findlay, and Alabama-Hunstville as former DII or DIII teams playing predomiately DIII schedules.

-Added Niagara, Canisius, Sacred Heart, UConn, and Holy Cross in a new category of "Former Play-Downs", as these were DI schools playing in DII/III for a period. These have a grey diamond-shaped marker.

Note: I'm only looking at teams that have played a predominately DIII schedule in 1983/84 or later, after the establishment of a DIII Championship.

Re: Up-to-date map of NCAA DIII Men's Ice Hockey

University of Buffalo used to play in D3. In fact, they were in the SUNYAC (as was all their sports teams at one time). I believe their hockey team still existed shortly after the cutoff year you declared.

They played in a rink in Wheatfield, before the town owned Amherst complex (which is right across the street from the Amherst campus) was built. Their club team now plays there.

Added them (used the Amherst Complex as the marker, since I couldn't be sure what rink in Wheatfield they played in - if it even exists anymore)

I think it was D-II. Clarkson played them in 73 & 74. Well we also played Norwich those years, too.

Buffalo's football page on Wikipedia (here) indicates that the school competed in DIII until they stepped up to DI in the early 90s, so while they probably played up to DII along with everyone else until the first time the DII championship was discontinued, they would've been back in DIII during the period Nate's looking to cover, best as I can tell.

No. They were most definitely D3 at the time, just like all the other SUNY university campuses. (Caveat, back in the days you are talking about, there was no D3. It was only D1 and D2.)

At one time, SUNY did not allow any of their institutions to play anything but D3, once D3 was created. And like I said, U. of Buffalo (as well as Albany and Binghamton) was in the SUNYAC in all their sports. And the SUNYAC is only a D3 league.

When SUNY allowed their four university campuses (the other being Stony Brook) to move up to D1, they did migrate from D3 to D2 and then to D1. However, by that time, Buffalo was not going to bring their hockey program up to D1, so they dumped it, leaving just a club team.

(P.S., Joe, did you really think I could be wrong about something concerning a SUNY school? )

I remember listening to the DII National semi-finals (way back when). Plattsburgh had Lowell on the ropes until late in the game. Must have been sometime around 1980.
