Re: **University of Wisconsin Superior Off Season Thread 2010**

Ok, here we go now!! What do we need to go from worst to first and the final four next year? How bout a couple of knuckle draggers on defense to go with our young mobile guys? Maybe a couple of snipers and a center or two to set them up. Oh wait, I forgot, how bout six or seven goalies to try out to see if we can get one that can play? Hows that for starters? What do you folks think?

These are very good questions, all of which need to be addressed. Before I go any further, please consider the following:

Conference play (NCHA) 2009-2010
-2 Yellowjackets in top 30 point scoring (7 in top 30 08'-09')
-3 Yellowjackets in top 30 goal scoring (8 in top 30 08'-09')
-Yellowjackets' top freshman point scorer skates on defense
-Bryan Dalbec ended with a GAA under 3 and a Save% just shy of 90%
-Scoring offense of 2.5 G/Game
-Scoring defense of 3.5 G/Game

It has to start with strong and efficient recruiting. UWS lacked balance all season long.

Dalbec should get the nod again in his Junior year even though all of you will disagree I'm sure.

Yes, we need big knuckle draggers on the blue line who have good vision around Dalbec (or netminder tbd). UWS also needs smart, poised centers to run bloody nose alley for once. Too many missed oppurtunities last season. Frustrating at times.

Again, the key balance. Ok, it's time to really start enjoying this offseason. Man it's getting nice out there.

Code:
G, Ben Waalkens Albert Lea Thunder (NAHL) 6'0", 175 Albert Lea, Minn. 16gp, (2-10-0, 4.17, .877)

I don't know much else about this guy than that stat line there....but is Stauber trying to finish last again? 2-10?

I haven't looked up Ben Waalkens, but he might be good, SUNY Morrisville's Caylin Relkoff might have finished 9-14, better than 2-10, but I also think Caylin is one of the top goalies in DIII.

Yes, but Caylin Relkoff also put up numbers better than 2-10. 4.17, .877 during his time in the juniors. Comparing 9-14 in DIII with 2-10 in NAHL is a bit of a stretch.

My point was, that even a great goalie needs still needs offense & defense, 2-10 certainly seems pretty bad, but nevertheless, he appears to have been granted a chance at the team. I'm hoping there is something that doesn't appear in the 2-10 alone, Stauber (192-63-41) must know something.

It's juniors. Numbers alone can often be very misleading. Albert Lea has been a pretty lousy team (and that might be generous in reference to the 08-09 team) and its goalies don't exactly get much help out there.

Example: Tom Lescovich had pretty horrid looking numbers two years ago for Albert Lea but played pretty well for Stout last year and had more than one terrific outing in net.

Goalies that come from bad junior teams are often easily developed at the next level. Many tenders can play for a junior dynasty and look like a stud with DI defenders in front of him through three lines of defense.

A kid seeing 50-60 shots a game from scoring areas and having numbers like 2.8 GAA and .880 SV% is pretty impressive. Put that same goaltender on a good team with solid defense he becomes a .920 SV% goaltender.

Re: **University of Wisconsin Superior Off Season Thread 2010**

There is some irony in this conversation:

We're talking about how we can't judge a goalie by his stats, because the defense in front of him plays just as much of a role... and yet, according to Webb's list on the other thread, Stauber has also brought in one of those Dmen...

Re: **University of Wisconsin Superior Off Season Thread 2010**

Word has it that Garrett Tinkham is going to try out and be allowed back on the team next season. If that is the case, it will be he and Dalbec that will see the time in the net, and this kid from the NAHL and O'Hara will be nothing more than bench warmers fighting for practice time.

Re: **University of Wisconsin Superior Off Season Thread 2010**

It's never too early for a goalie controversy is it??!!

Drew Strandberg Traverse City North Stars (NAHL)
40gp 24-10-2 2.38gaa .909sv% 4so

Cool but controversy

..."We targeted Drew from the very beginning as a goaltender that we wanted to be in our program," said Yellowjacket Head Coach Dan Stauber. "It's no secret that we struggled in goal last season and we feel that by adding a player like Drew to our team we have gone a long way in solidifying our goalie play."...

Re: **University of Wisconsin Superior Off Season Thread 2010**

Stauber has some solid players coming in this year. Should be a good season.
