University of Phoenix.... And Idaho

So some interesting news coming from my alma mater- they are in the process of buying the University of Phoenix.

Why? Because it's a lot cheaper than building their own on line presence.

U of P is still accredited for their programs, but where they have problems is an advertising scandal a few years ago, and that the students carry a large amount of student debt. The former isn't a big deal for this, but I would think the latter is an issue.

Still have to learn a lot more about this deal. But one thing that will be interesting, thanks to our rival down south not doing anything significant academically, this will probably take some students that treat BSU as a community college to then go to Idaho and put them at UoP. Hopefully cheaper, certainly more convenient since you get to stay home instead of moving to Boise and it will get you the first two years before going to Moscow.

The f-ck does that even mean? Is Purdue Chicken going to buy Liberty?

Not sure, completely. But the deal as I've read it is that Idaho will pay $500M and will have complete control over the University. There will still be a BoD and a President, but the BoD will be all Idaho appointees. Or something like that.

U of I claims that they will end up being in the top 5 of all on line universities. Whatever that means.

The reason is the same reason of the recent Michigan multi billion dollar campaign- a cliff in potential students.

While my insiders are suggesting to me that this is a good deal, I'm going to wait and see.

I don’t know if I’d say this is becoming common, but it’s at least been done before. Funny that Kep used Purdue Chicken, because actual Purdue bought Kaplan and turned it into Purdue Global.

Is this going to be Idaho-Phoenix where it’s technically a different school like Purdue Global, or more like ASU Online where it’s branded as its own thing but you still come away with an ASU degree?

From what I understand, they will be separate. From what I read and from my insiders. Phoenix still has accreditation, so it's a real university. But this will transform it from a "for profit" to a non profit.

So, that's what happened to Kaplan. I had wondered why I haven't heard that name in a while.

I'm surprised they didn't keep the name. It had heft in the northeast at least. It was the place Jews would send their dumber kids.

It was (still is?) big in the bar exam prep sector too. There were basically two main bar prep companies: Kaplan and Barbri. Both were ripoffs but after spending $100k+ to get your jd degree, what's an extra $5k to make sure you get your license.

Kaplan was started as a way to help Jews get into Ivy League Schools that had been rejecting them...

I took NASD and insurance licensing prep classes at Kaplan some 23 years ago. The exams were a walk in park, Kazanski.
