Union College: 2024-2025

Men's Hockey Announces Nine Newcomers for 2024-25

https://unionathletics.com/news/202...key-announces-nine-newcomers-for-2024-25.aspx

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College men's hockey coach Josh Hauge announced the nine newcomers for the 2024-25 season on Friday. The class is comprised of two transfer students and seven first-years. Representing six states and two Canadian provinces, there are six forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender joining the program.

It looks like our non-conference schedule will be "Light" this year except for a matchup with BU in Boston. We only have 3 HE opponents, and we have 5 AHA. Excited to have the Dutchment visit the Boston Area.

Three very recent news items:

#1. Some alumni donated $40,000,000 to Union's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Programs. As a student, engineering was Union Academic's strong point, and companies like GE and IBM couldn't hire enough. With many questioning the return on investment of a four-year college degree, having a robust engineering program will be a wise investment.
#2. Civil Engineering Returns to Union. Several years back, there was an uproar among alumni when Union dropped its civil engineering program. Again, strengthening engineering will only make the school a more attractive place as students seek majors that make them employable.
#3. President Harris will step down after this academic year.
President Harris to step down at the end of this academic year

Football is getting slaughtered. We are giving up 30+ points/game. We hired a great coach who turned the program around, but he left for greener pastures. I just got my tickets for the BU game. I hope we can give them a game and not embarrass ourselves.

Josh Nixon's senior year! He is really good and exciting for the fans to watch. However he can't do it alone so the team will need production from other forwards in order to move up in the standings from last year. The team should be solid defensively with experience at goal and the blueline.

I didn't see it posted here, but just an FYI, Rick Bennett is on staff at Q'Pac. Funny how it didn't make their "news" feed on the team page. LOL

When Union faces the Q'Pac this year, I will cheer for the Bobcats. Bennett is a great coach and will add much to their program. With his ouster, I stopped giving $ to the Union Annual Fund. Maybe I will start giving to the Quinnipiac Annual Fund.

It looks like Holy Cross tried to fight back against BU in the first period of their match but was blown out of the water in the second period when BU scored four goals. The final was 5-2. I hope we can do at least as well.

BU has an outstanding team, and I look forward to seeing them in the Frozen Four. In the first nine minutes, we outshot BU 10-1 but could not get one past their outstanding goalie. Then, we fell apart and gave up three goals in the first period. We need to work on screening shots, redirecting shots and collapsing on the net when there is a rebound. I was impressed with the character of the players. We have some speed. I could see us finishing in the middle four or better. I wish we had more depth.

I read Ken Schott's article in the Gazette recounting memorable games over the years between RPI and Union at Messa (or Achilles) Rink. There was a game against RPI in January 1985 at Union. Union was in Division III at the time. RPI had Adam Oates and John Carter (and probably Darren Puppa). In that game Union had a 2-1 lead lead into the final 2 minutes. RPI (I believe) pulled its goaltender, getting a tying goal and then scored again to just beat Union. (I don't recall whether the game went into overtime. ) From that point, RPI went on to win the Division I national championship(!), while Union (under Charlie Morrison) hosted the Division III "Final Four" tournament in which (I believe) RIT emerged victorious. That game against RPI was hugely important to the development of Union hockey. The RIT coach at the time (Bruce Delventhal) soon became the Union coach and initiated the process of moving the Union program from Division III into ECAC Division I.

It's hard to figure out how much the ECAC has improved this year. We are 13-2-2 against AHA teams but only 2-8 against HE and 1-4 against the Big 10.

Union is 7-3-1 but they really haven't beaten anyone.

The stronger teams they've played - Providence (granted, exhibition), Boston University, Clarkson - they lost all those games.

Union has done a good job at mostly beating teams they should beat - Army, St. Lawrence, RPI, Stonehill, Mercyhurst. The Fairbanks weekend was an exception.

The Clarkson game was a big test, and the Golden Knights were clearly the better team most of that game.

I think Union has a weakness between the pipes. To me, Chauvette is a weaker starter. He has a sub .900 save percentage going back to the start of the 23-24 season. Last year, his .893 mark was next to last among ECAC goaltenders and he's at .894 this year.

Union doesn't really have a great alternative on the roster - freshman Louis Massie had a GAA near 4 in the USHL last year - nor a lot in the recruiting pipeline as far as goalies go.

Union used to be somewhat of a goalie factory - Kinkaid, Grosenick, Stevens. Darion Hanson was good too, but he's the last good goalie recruit they've brought in and that was in 2017. (Connor Murphy was a transfer).

It's hard to figure out how much the ECAC has improved this year. We are 13-2-2 against AHA teams but only 2-8 against HE and 1-4 against the Big 10.

Dartmouth and Harvard have taken big steps up. Union seems to have as well. It's a stronger, flatter conference with Q returning from the heavens.

I suspect we put 3-4 teams in the national tourny. Union could definitely get there if they keep improving. Good luck.
