UMASS-NewMass 2022-2023

Lots of respect from the pre-season polls for the Minutemen. A bit surprising in that they have graduated/lost a lot of talent from last years team. My guess is that they will start slowly and improve as the year goes on. Lots of new faces. Have to put my trust in Carvy that he can assimilate all the new players and have them grow into a successful team. Keeping my fingers crosses! GO UMASS!

Not sure what to make of the exhibition loss to Sacred Heart. Used 11 new players and three goalies. Carvy was not pleased. I think with so many new faces that there will be a bunch of ups and downs as the season progresses. UMASS has had solid goaltending for quite a while which kept them in games. Unclear whether they have another top-notch goalie on the team.

Denver looks awful tough. Hope Carvy has a good plan for the weekend. Lots of freshman playing and only one mediocre game under their belts. This may be a tough opening month for the Minutemen.

Interesting box score. Minutemen score two SHG while killing off 5-minute major in first, then Pioneers score two EAG with over five minutes remaining in game.

So does this weekend sweep say more about UMASS or more about Denver? Honestly I was hoping that UMASS would just put up a good showing against the pios and they far exceeded any expectations. Goalie stopped all but two-one on a 6 on 4 and another 5-4 in the first game. One of the concerns was did they have a net minder like they had with Lindberg and Murray. Looks like they do. Much more optimism going forward!

Remember last year? As defending national champs, you were swept by Minnesota State and they go on to play in the final. Now you turn around and sweep defending national champion Denver.

I think the weekend sweep says more about UMASS than Denver.

I remember those games all too well. Minnesota State was dominant! It would be a great season if UMASS played in the final. I guess Carvy has a few things figured out.

The Minutemen might have their next good goalie. And unlike last year they don’t need to take a ton of shots to get goals. There seems to be more firepower this year. Could be a good year. Too early to say but Carvel teams get better as the season progresses, so I’m liking what I’m seeing so far.

Weekend series against Union. Not sure what to expect. On paper it looks like it could be a weekend sweep but you never know. Could be a letdown after the Denver series. I wonder if Pav will be in net both nights or will Carvy give Cole Brady a chance. My guess is that if UMASS wins game 1 easily, Brady will be in net for game 2.

I’m not a gambling man, otherwise I’d take that bet. As long as Luke plays the way he’s been playing so far, he’s the man and the other two won’t see more than a couple of games this season. I’m basing that on Carvel’s history. Murray was clearly starter material but rarely played until Lindberg left.

Good weekend against Union. Hate to see a weaker team get dominated like that- 14-1 in goals ooof! Hope Union can get its act together as the year progresses.

Good showing by Brady and the freshman along with the regular suspects. Surprised UMASS is not doing better in the polls even though the polls really reflect what is truly going on at this time of year.

Merrimack this weekend and then Providence and BU on successive weekend. I think after the next three weekends there will be some clarity in HE (or perhaps complete confusion!). HE is looking better this year. Kudos to Maine on the 4-0 win against Q.

Whew! Merrimack always plays UMASS tough. Keeping my fingers crossed tonight. Seems like Makar is starting to break out and Connor looks like the real deal.

What a tough couple of weeks for the Minutemen. I think they are about what I expected....the rest of Hockey East is much better than last year and what I expected. BU put a serious hurt on them and they didn't exactly dominate UNH. How they gave up so many goals to BU is confusing- bad play or weak goalies? I wonder if the reason Carvy got rid of his assistants is that they really didn't recruit the type of players he wants. We'll see how the rest of they year plays out though I think they will be a much better team at the end of the year. Right now they are middle to bottom of HE. I think Carvy needs to figure out a few things.

Yup. Evidence so far suggests that this is a lower tier HE team. They’ll improve but could be a case of wait till next year.

in the meantime I’ll enjoy watching Merrimack and UConn having breakout years. I realize rooting for UConn is verboten but the Mike’s hoops dot com yahoos can bite me.

Keeping my fingers crossed for the Friendship Four- opening game against a tough Lowell team. Good (Irish) luck to the Minutemen!
