UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

Good thread title Ray, similar to what I was gonna go with!

Similarly, I also hoping for a few extra wins at the end of the season this year, preferably four of them. I'm also very interested in how CHL guys will translate to NCAA; many team's fortunes hang on this, not just Maine's, so will be worth keeping an eye on for sure.

I would not aim to start Fowler or Russell at center. I didn’t think it worked last year. They can fill in when need be, but they are better suited for the wing. Would love to be wrong.

Think you are discounting James. He is a natural center. Yes he was hurt last year but he played at the end of the year. He will have 6 months to recover. He was the best (or 1 of 2) players on the Lone Star team that won the NAHL in ‘24. He was awesome that year. He would have been Sioux Fall’s top line/top 6 center. He wore the ‘C’. He’s got decent size and think his game will mesh well with Barr’s expectations. Center depth/adaptability of their top 3 centers may be the biggest question mark on the team. That and how well the team carries on the on and off the ice culture that the older group that graduated out left behind.

My lines in my head are right now…

Poirier, Scott, Nadeau
Fowler, Lipinski, Marques
Freel, James, Russell
Scholle, Komarov, Gerrior

(Peluso, Pichette, Califiore extra skaters)

On D…I think we are discounting how solid Nobes was down the stretch last year. May have been their best d man in the second half. But Maine is absolutely loaded on defense. I thin this is the best core on paper I’ve ever seen this program have. Maybe Shawn’s last couple teams.

Holt, Djurasevic
Langlois, Nobes
Coughlin, Chabrier
Usereau, Peterson
Motew, Arnott.

In goal and on d they are loaded. Again, Center play and how well this younger group meshes into playing championship level, heavy hard to play against hockey is the biggest question. They are pound for pound a more talented forward group than they have been the last 12-13 years.

I really want Scholle is take a step this year. He has great hands, great release. Thought he had a sophomore slump for the first 3/4’s of the year. Think he needed to get stronger as he got pushed off the puck too much. He definitely players better the last month or so.

The Fowler or Russell at center is valid question mark. I put one at center because it gives some more experience at the position.

On James, I put him on the bench because he didn’t play mush last season. It likely set him back. I don’t see him playing in front of anyone else on the roster based on the way other players did last season. Keep in mind, Peluso went on a tear at the end of the season in the playoffs. If Komarov continues to struggle on face offs then maybe James can crack the line up at center? I like how Komarov skated and played but didn’t like his face offs.

Yes, Nobes played great down the stretch. He will likely need to be at peak to stay in the line up. This group of rookie defensemen seem to be extremely strong. I had Coughlin sitting because he was also injured and played sparingly at the end of the season. Didn’t seem as strong as what he was prior to his injury.

It is a bit of a guessing game and the good news is that they will determine who gets playing time based on their play in practice.

I also think this could be one of the best defenses of all time. Barr really appears to know how to recruit and cultivate a good set of d pairs. I think he coaches the d pairs in practice.

I hope Bennett can make an impact with the forwards.

I can’t wait for the season to start.

Only one early 4pm game on a Sunday. I like it. The 2 and 3pm starts stink. This team is pretty much prime time the whole year with 7 and 7:30 starts and one 6:30 at Lindenwood. I did see one game is TBD but hopefully not early against UConn

Love all the discussion so early in the offseason, excitement around the program continues to build. Since we’re all doing it, my take on the lines.

Poirier - Lapinski - Nadeau
Freel - Scott - Marques
Fowler - Komarov - Russell
Scholle - James - Gerrior

Holt - Chabrier
Coughlin - Djurasevic
Usereau - Peterson
Langlois

Very high on Langlois but he hasn’t played in over a year so I expect some rust from him early on.

Regarding the lineup, I saw a page on Instagram trying to do a "preview", and this is what they had:

Freel-Lipinski-Nadeau
Gerrior-Komarov-Russell
Fowler-Scott-Poirier
James-Scholle-Peluso
Extras: Marques, Pichette, Calafiore

Holt-Djurasevic
Chabrier-Userau
Coughlin-Peterson
Extras: Langlois, Arnott, Nobes, (Motew)

Boija
Rousseau
Stewart

I dont think that Marques will be on the bench. They also initially forgot to list Motew. Here's my stab at what I think a potential lineup could look like:

Poirier-Scott-Nadeau
Marques-Lipinski-Freel
Fowler-Komarov-Russell
Scholle-James-Peluso
Extras: Gerrior, Pichette, Calafiore

Holt-Djurasevic
Chabrier-Coughlin
Userau-Langlois
7D Peterson
Extras: Nobes, Motew, Arnott

Boija
Rousseau
Stewart

Barr has shown he likes to run 7D. I think that collection of 7 guys would be the ones in the lineup if all healthy, maybe mixing around the freshman here and there. I think the only set pair is probably Holt-Djurasevic at the top. Up front, I put James at 4C since I agree with others that Russell and Fowler at center didn't really seem to work for me last year. For all the talk about how strong the defense is (which is deserved), I think that forward group will look pretty deep too. Should be a really great season upcoming.

What Instagram page did that come from? According to Nuetral Zone Marques is the highest rated incoming recruit at 4.5. I find him being on the bench in favor of others suspect. Additionally, Langlois was highest nhl drafted defensemen(3rd round) coming in and lead QMJHL in scoring. So I doubt he rides the pine as long as he is healthy enough. So I would be interested in seeing who is behind this instagram page.

It was collegepucknxt, they did a post about Maine's lineup and pipeline back on July 2. Normally I like what they post but I agree that I found that lineup a bit suspect.

This is where I am, but I think Motew plays over Peterson

Yes, they probably suffer from trying to cover all programs and get some details wrong about every program. For example they have Motew in the pipeline category, but he is already a sophomore and is a transfer so he’s on roster now. It is likely Langlois and Marques are 2 of the top few impact freshmen.
