U-19 Programs

Just looked at the Hockey Canada Website and they announced the roster for the U-22 team. Four Quebec players (Blais, Bettez, Emard, and Rougeau) all played for Dawson College. Two former Dawson players (Ward and Poulin) are currently with the National team. I was wondering if there was another program that has had the same success with former players.

Not sure about Canada - but Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota has placed some players on the US National teams.

Well.... looky looky where the Director for Female Hockey, Julie Healy is from. But I guess that's just a coincidence...huh.

I've seen 5 of these 6 Dawson players play over the years, and they are all worthy candidates. One other program that comes to mind in terms of large contribution to the National Team system are the Aeros out of Toronto. Off the top of my head Irwin, Birchard, Kessler, McMeekin and Hosier are all fairly recent grads from that system.

Looking back over the last 5 or 6 years you will find that both these clubs have been at or near the top of the heap in the minor girls hockey ranks at the U19/U21 level in Canada.

I can't believe I'm going to dignify your post with a response as you are pretty ignorant if you think that the reason these 6 extremely talented players are with Team Canada is because Julie Healy is from Quebec.

ya..like I said it's probably just a coincidence.

You have the opportunity that most of us here in the east would love to have, you have these players practicing and playing in your own backyard. You could go out to see all of these amazing hockey players (and I'm talking from every Province) and then make some informed remarks. I really have no sympathy, patience, or energy to deal with this type of attitude. It can't be what other Provinces are doing right or what we are doing wrong, you have to look to blame others. This "victim" attitude gets really old really quickly.

I will assume the 78 means either your birth year or that you are Dawson Alumni and either would explain a number of things.

FYI, you are correct. I have had the opportunity to watch a number of red & white games over the years at the U18, 22 and National levels and firmly beleive my remarks are informed. I wonder how many National tryout camps you have attended? I thought so...

Not to take anything away from the girls you mentioned, Dawson College or the Province of Quebec however we are completley mistified as to why both the U18 & 22 teams are suddenley heavily weighted with players from Quebec. IMHO and from what I've seen there were a number of other players from all over Canada that were equal to or better than these picks. The thing is starting to develop an odour.

In closing.... and I am closing this discussion, I would suggest the next time you open a thread flying the "Fleur de Lis" you give some thought to the fact that every post is open to opinion/criticism.... especially those that are blowing their own horn.

BTW you might want to try the 24 hour rule in the future.

Nuff said.

NAHA as well. Other than that, I'd venture to say probably Assabet and Polar Bears. Lately Chicago....all players have to come from some team right?! :D

Overall, I'd say the variety (err diversity?) in team selection for Canada vs the US is pretty similar. The best players want to play for the best teams...so I'm not surprised when multiple players from the better teams end up on a selection team.

You are very correct. NAHA has 5 on the 18U team this year and ZERO influence with USA Hockey as we all know.

First game report from HC

First game report from HC

At the risk of incurring the wrath of "5 4 fighting", looks to me that in the first exhibition game it was the Quebec Players being prominent on the score sheet. The Canuck U22's gave the Senior squad a run for their money until two of the youngsters on the national squad turned the game.

LATE SPECIAL TEAMS PUSH HELPS NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM TO WIN

CALGARY, Alta. – It was close, but it was not to be for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team on Monday night.

Leading 3-2 with seven minutes to go, the U22 team allowed a power play goal and a shorthanded marker in the dying minutes, allowing the National Women’s Team to escape with a 4-3 victory in the first game of the three-game series between the teams.
Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) and Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.) did the damage late for the national team, as Agosta helped set up Poulin for the game-tying goal on a two-man advantage at 13:06 before Poulin returned the favour on the game-winner with 66 seconds remaining.

Despite playing its first competitive game as a team, the U22 side came out with the momentum in the opening 20 minutes, drawing three penalties and outshooting the national team 12-5, but the game was scoreless after one.

Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, Que.) finally converted a U22 power play early in the second period, stepping in from the blueline and snapping a shot past goaltender Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, Que.) for a 1-0 lead.

But NWT veterans Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) made sure the lead did not last, scoring 2:33 apart to put the national side ahead 2-1 and ensuring an unhappy send-off for U22 netminder Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont.), who was replaced by Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont.) after Apps’ goal.

Trailing for the first time, the under-22 team went back to work on the power play, getting goals from Karell Emard (Richelieu, Que.) and Jessica Wong (Baddeck, N.S.) to take a 3-2 lead to the dressing room.

Determined not to suffer its first loss of the year, the national team came out flying to start period three and earned a full two-minute man advantage when Emard and Jesse Scanzano (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.) took minor penalties with eight minutes to go.

Poulin took advantage of the 5-on-3, blasting a point shot by Kessler to draw the national team even.

Younger than all but two players in the game, the 18-year-old wasn’t satisfied with just tying the game, as she outraced a U22 defender to the puck and fed Agosta, who poked the game-winning goal past Kessler with just 1:06 remaining on the clock.

The national team outshot the U22 side 13-3 in the third period and 31-25 overall.

The two teams meet again on Tuesday (7 p.m. MT) before wrapping up the series Thursday night (7 p.m. MT). Both games are at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.

P.S....I've seen Poulin play for years. This kid is the real deal. I expect Vancouver to be her coming out party for the general public.

Poulin...
She has not committed as of yet correct? For some odd reason, I feel like we might lose this girl to CIS....not sure what makes me feel this way.

Also, OnMAA, whats your take on the closeness of the U22-NWT game. Surprised at all?

I saw an article awhile back saying she was looking at U.S. schools. Obviously, that doesn't mean she'll choose to play at one. I'm still hoping that she'll end up at Cornell. Speaking of which, the good news is I know of at least one top U.S. recruit that Cornell is in the running to land for 2010-11. :D

She has not committed yet, her schedule was too busy last year for her to do any official visits. I would be shocked if she chose to go the CIS route. As for the closeness of the game, I would attribute it to a couple of things.
1-The senior team probably came out a little too confident and 2-This year the U22's are really U25's so they have a little more experience both in University and International play.

Was I surprised. Yes, would normally expect a larger difference on the score sheet. Having said that, the U22's played a bunch of games in the U22 Camp last week, so their players may have been more game ready. Personally would not put too much stock into the result of one game. Who is to say how the line combinations are worked and how much experimenting there is. The games we wanna win are the ones in February. :)

Ms Poulin going in the CIS route. Highly doubt it. Heard rumours of at least two locations she might be headed, but for now that is all heresay and speculation.

Update: Meanwhile second game was not as close. Seniors 5-2 over U22s, and outshooting them by a large margin.
