Twitter question

Cornell Big Red
So, I got a Twitter account (I don't know why) a long time ago, and at least twice a week I get "x has requested you follow her account" emails. The first couple I looked up and saw they were obviously bots, now I just delete them.

My question is: what's the scam? How do they plan to get over?

More followers = more people looking at their tweets.
Then they can tweet links that you might click on.
Links could be real, or could be scams.

Re: Twitter question

That's odd.

I've had one for quite a while and I don't get any tweets like that. I just use mine to follow a few choice things that I want information on.

I've never seen a "request you follow." Only "X is following you on Twitter." A lot of times it's spam. A lot of times they get nixed before they ever get a chance to spam you, however, sometimes they'll get you with a direct message or a @reply.

I'd say if you got a "request to follow," then ignore it.

You can also follow @spam to get a heads up on the recent spam tactics so you know what to look out for. It's an account run by Twitter itself.

There used to be a couple of utilities out there that would rank all of your followers for spamminess and give you the block links to take care of the problem.

Re: Twitter question

You only get the "request to follow" if you have your account set to private. If it's set to public, people can follow you without having to ask your permission.

Re: Twitter question

I am on Twitter sparingly but every once in a while I get an email informing me X is now following me, by the time I notice I'm being followed they are no longer in my list. Methinks spammers get nuked pretty quickly.

How does a guy with the word "grey" in his name have twitter while I don't?
