Tufts Women's Hockey

Does anyone know why Tufts University does not have a D3 Women's hockey team??? Tufts fields a D3 men's team (30 on roster). No rink on campus......men play at The Valley Forum (3.6 miles from campus) and the co-ed club team plays at Flynn Rink (4 miles away). Tufts has an equal number of men's and women's varsity teams. There are 11 NESCAC schools, 9 have women's varsity hockey. Thanks for any info!

Yes, I've always wondered the same thing. Very, very odd. Same can be said for Babson....and they actually have a nice rink on campus.

Re: Tufts Women's Hockey

Not knowing Tufts' specific situation, the answer to the question "why doesn't (insert school) play hockey?" is almost always money and that they can meet the requirement for equal opportunity through cheaper sports.

Hockey is not a cheap sport to play. Facilities cost money, especially if you're renting ice time. Even if they own the rink it costs money to keep up the ice (energy for cooling, Zamboni, etc). There's a lot of expensive equipment to buy (sticks, skates, pads, helmets, pucks, skate sharpener, etc). Compare the cost of equipment and facilities a team needs for hockey compared to soccer, basketball, volleyball. Also, hockey players can have a higher rate of injury with bodies flying around the ice.

Opponents are further apart since there are less teams so there's more travel involved.

If a school finds they're able to meet equitable opportunity with cheaper sports, they may choose that route over hockey if they don't feel it's a particular priority of the campus community.

So tell me again how Tufts doesn't have enough money for hockey?...one of the top schools in the US with a huge endowment [last I checked it's $1.8 BILLION]...yet schools like Wilkes, Johnson & Wales, etc. can afford a team?
Sorry, in this case, it aint about the $$$.

Of course they have the money, most colleges do, but that doesn't mean they want to spend it on ice hockey. It's not that they don't have the money as an institution, it's how much that institution wants to give its athletic department and whether that athletic department feels that hockey is worth investing in over cheaper sports to play.

If beds are full, you don't need an extracurricular activity to attract students to fill the beds.

Its always about the money.

Re: Tufts Women's Hockey

LOL. This isn't East Central Bumblefuk Tech...They have an endowment of nearly $2 BILLION. If you think money is the issue, you're high.

That's not what he's saying.

It's always about the money doesn't mean they don't have the money. It means, it's always about the money.

Back when Pegula endowed Penn State with all those millions to build a rink and startup a men's and women's hockey programs, there were some people who criticized it stating that Pegula should be donating that money for "better" causes. The reply others said, was that it's Pegula's money, and he can do what he wants with it. And they are right, whether you like/dislike, agree/disagree with it.

It's Tufts money, and they can do what they want with it, whether you like/dislike, agree/disagree with it. Ergo, it's always about the money.

Sorry, no, that was not his point. The point was that Tufts apparently couldn't afford a women's team.

Really. You read his mind? Fascinating. I didn't know ESP actually existed.

Admittedly, I was kind of doing the same thing...

Until he speaks for himself, quite frankly, one of us is full of s---. Who it is will be decided by gojackets.

Schools aren't obligated to provide every sport. Just because some people say that it would be great if Tufts had a women's team doesn't mean it is in concert with their mission and vision. Why doesn't Tufts have men's volleyball? They should be able to afford that, too.
