Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.

At what post count does a thread become sacred? Is it too late for this one to be quietly snuffed out?

Post 1 is birth, so there's no argument there. But some believe if you think of any topic the state can force you to start a thread and mod it for 18 years.

I would argue that when Kepler thought of the idea of this thread counts as the start of the thread. An idea is sacred and many have led to Nobel Prizes.

You can't destroy an idea because it's inconvenient or malformed. Even bad ideas can sprout great things.

And if the thought is evil? I wouldn't call every thought coming out of Charles Manson sacred. Unless we're going with the Holy Cow! criteria.

A 26 year old woman is going to marry that clown. Anything is possible.

If the thought was shoved in your head against your will by propaganda there can still be no exception!

When a rocket ship fails to launch properly, don't they say that the launch was aborted?

Is this another thread about space shuttle porn?

Re: The "I Can't Believe There's No Abortion Thread" Abortion Thread

Who said/claims that?

It's the reductio ad absurdum. Life begins at birth / viability / conception / penetration / heavy petting / third drink / first date / the ability to bear children as God's-directed incubator appliance now make me a sammich.

In a bizarre, creepy twist, one answer is "Bill Cosby."

I distinctly remember one of his standup routines from the '80s ('90s?) where he had a line something like, "I'm Catholic, and it's great, because if my wife ever refuses me, I take her straight to the Pope. I say 'uh, Pope....,' and the Pope says 'you gotta do it!' ha ha ha."

Re: The "I Can't Believe There's No Abortion Thread" Abortion Thread

Here's the logical distinction that trips up most people.

"Life" begins when the first cell division occurs after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall. That is just basic biology.

However, "human life" does not necessarily begin until several months later, after a certain amount of specialization occurs (the transition between an undifferentiated mass of cells into actual nascent spine, heart, liver, etc.)

Since this subject can be so emotionally fraught for some people, individual experience matters. Those of us who have seen our own children in the womb during an ultrasound probably have a different visceral sense of when "human life" begins than those who have not. When you see that tiny little heart beating away, and observe the unmistakeable outline of a latent tiny little person there, it is no longer a theoretical argument.

I thought it was a thread as soon as you start typing the first few letters in the subject line.

Oh, really. Now it's ok to use science in this discussion????? Please.
