SUNY Launches Tuition Match Program For Eight States

The SUNY system, which includes DIII hockey programs at Plattsburgh, Cortland, Oswego, Potsdam, Canton, Buffalo State, and Morrisville, has announced a new tuition match difference for eight states. These states are Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California. All of the schools that play hockey are listed as participating in this program.

The way this program works is that if SUNY's out-of-state tuition and fees are higher than in-state tuition and fees at the flagship state school, students will receive a scholarship for the difference.

The flagships recognized by SUNY for this program are:

Connecticut: UConn - Storrs
Pennsylvania: Penn State - University Park
New Jersey: Rutgers - New Brunswick
Massachusetts: UMass Amherst
Vermont: UVM - Burlington
New Hampshire: UNH - Durham
Illinois: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
California: UC Berkeley

Plattsburgh, for one, also offers a Welcome to New York grant for all out-of-state students who reside on campus while attending ($3,500 grant per semester) and their release on this program implies that this grant will be added to the new program. I'm not sure if the other SUNYs offer similar grants.

Plattsburgh is my alma mater and I think this could be helpful, especially since Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, and New Jersey are all states I've seen recruits come from.

They just have to be very careful they don't get out of state numbers which skew towards athletes out of proportion to the rest of the student population. That's what got numerous schools in trouble with the NCAA when they had a similar program for Canadian students.

On Plattsburgh's page about Welcome to NY grants there's a disclaimer about athletics not being considered when awarding that grant.

I would assume this is going to be much easier to comply with than the Canadian policy. I suspect it's much easier to get non-athletes from these other states than it was to recruit Canadian non-athletes. But yes, I agree someone will have to be keeping an eye on this...
