Spencer Penrose award

Are the finalists AUTOMATICALLY chosen?

The USCHO story says that you have to be :

1) a conference coach of the year
or
2) if not #1, team made it to frozen 4.

http://www.uscho.com/2016/03/30/thr...e-2015-16-spencer-penrose-award-as-top-coach/

it appears that nobody from this years crop of Frozen 4 teams/Conference COY's are left out. I guess you could have as few as 6 or as many as 10 nominees in any given year. (assuming no co-winners in a conference)

Thoughts?

Re: Spencer Penrose award

What is so surprising about this award is that Jerry York has only won it once (1977 with Clarkson) almost 40 years ago. He did not win it during his 5 National Titles (once at Bowling Green and 4 times at BC). Really thought with passing the 1000 win mark that he would have had serious consideration this year yet he was not even second in the award or even first in his own conference. Considering that BC lost their top recruit, Bracco, very early in the season and Demko was out for a few games and he brought in a late addition to play goal in his place it is puzzling why he is always overlooked. He is the proverbial nice guy finishing last.

Coach of the year awards tend to go to coaches of teams that greatly exceed expectations in some way. There are exceptions but that is the general trend. It's hard to exceed expectations by a large amount when expectations are that your team is going to be in legitimate contention for the national title every year.
