SLU @ RPI February 28,2015

Re: SLU @ RPI February 28,2015

We did not go into a shell and we pick up a win. Maybe we learned something.
Seniors Diebold and McGowan are the stars of the game.

i would suggest the two goals by Melanson within minutes of each other should count as at least star #3. We did a lot right tonight (and as usual a lot wrong) but I did not see the team give up as has happened in past games when the opponents stepped it up in the third. Very proud of this team tonight and regardless of what happens next weekend, the boys finished the season strong with a 3 point home weekend.

Does anyone remember when we scored our last penalty shot?

Just wanted to throw a comment or two in.
I've been a season ticket holder at RPI since 1973-74 and this is the first penalty shot I have ever seen them score at HFH (with the exception of one that I saw in an exhibition game).
And I took McGowan in the PtC to boot! A great way to end the home season.

Jen and I were in the Pepsi Arena in Albany when Brad Tapper scored one against BU in October 1999? We won 3-2 as i recall in an exciting game. That was the year he scored 31 goals and none were empty netters.

I was in Hawaii for our tenth wedding anniversary so I missed those games. Pretty good excuse... :)

Oh right, I forgot about last year's PS in the exhibition; I think Zalewski had it, and his style reminded me a lot of TJ Oshie, lulling the goalie to sleep.

Only other one for RPI I've seen was Polacek's SHG in overtime vs. Colgate.

Melanson certainly deserves a star, I was only pointing out the seniors on their night.
I believe that the only reason we were able to regain the lead in the third period last night was because we didn't stop playing in the period, so when they scored the tying goal, we did not have to shift gears, we were already playing solid hockey and continued to press.
I just wish we could play with a little more consistency. We had a decent team this year and should have done better.
Hopefully the playoffs will turn the season around.

EHF: I could not agree more. We have more than a decent team this year. We had the makings of a very good team. Injuries hurt as did illness (imagine Melanson's freshman statistics if he did not get a case of Mono and sat out or if he was not sat out early in the season). I think he is leading the team in both goals and points going into the playoffs. A lot of ifs could have turned this season around. If we could win important faceoffs, if we could protect a lead, if we did not get called for penalties by the sound of the hit, if we had a power play in which guys moved around the ice instead of just passing the puck around the periphery and taking a long shot that is invariably blocked, if we came out of the dressing room ready to play each period. But, I am not so sure that this coming weekend we will not do some of this and give CCT a tougher time than most imagine. Remember, if we do not allow the EA goal to Cornell two weeks ago or if we do not allow that third period CCT goal Friday-we would be hosting this series instead of driving up to Potsdorf:(

Still would have been going there with just the former. CCT would still have the series 3-1.
