Skiing/Snowboarding 09-10: Go West, Young Man!

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 09-10: Go West, Young Man!

Way to look for the old thread that no one cared about and disappeared into the bowels of the cafe ;)

The old thread was "Skiing/Snowboarding 2008-09: A Place Where Western Bias is Welcome!" I figured a new season needed a new thread.

By the way, I won't be joining you in Utah over winter break. I'm gonna go to Montana instead.

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 09-10: Go West, Young Man!

Sadly, I don't know when I'm getting any time on the slopes in this year. If I start my master's program in January, I don't see myself getting up to the family cabin as much as I have this fall. That leaves me with the lame dirt mounds in metro Detroit that they call "ski hills". :(

FYP ;)

The mountain I ski at in the Catskills (go ahead and nag me for calling it a mountain, you lucky westerners) is scheduled to open this Saturday after trying for 3 weeks now, but mother nature isn't being nice yet. Unfortunately I am busy this weekend, but I'm hoping to get 2-3 days in next weekend before finals and heading home for break.

Just because we're in the WCHA doesn't mean we count as "westerners" when it comes to skiing. We get the joys of 300'-600' verticals too. :( Except for Mt. Bohemia, which gets close to 1000' and has some pretty awesome terrain. :D

Actually, in a few cases, you're probably right. Either that, or that's where they buried all the dead bodies over the years. ;) :D
I know for sure Brighton is a garbage pile. I think there's at least one more, but I forget the name.

Your choices are Alpine Valley, Pine Knob, and "Mt." Holly

Pretty sure it's "Mt." Holly, but maybe I'm wrong. I haven't skied any of that trash (pun intended) since after-school ski lessons in 6th grade.

Heh, I was just preparing for the Coloradoians that I'm sure are bound to pop up sooner or later. I'm skiing at a 1400 vertical place, but the top in the area is 1600. When I go home I'm hoping to get to Whiteface (Lake Placid) with a few friends.

I'll gladly take 1000+ vert

Right now, things are finally looking positive across the Midwest, as most resorts should be able to blow snow starting with today/tomorrow on through next week on a nightly basis... Hopefully that'll get some runs open and they can start getting caught up... To my knowlege, Ski Brule in Da Yoop is the only place open right now, and even they are stretching things...

Right now, I am looking at getting out for the 1st time sometime around the 15th or so... Although I have a lovely instructor's meeting scheduled for Saturday... Yay for forcing the stupidity out of a bunch of 16-17 year old Shawn White wanna-be's....

I'll never understand why so many nerds are so obsessed with snowboarding. Skiing is so much cooler

Please - the whole skier/snowboarder rivalry is so 90s.

Even though I agree with you. Effing knuckledraggers. ;) :D

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 09-10: Go West, Young Man!

snowboarders are dangerous. they are usually high. and they go too fast and run into people and other living things. their pants are baggy. they bring their own lunch.

And they tend to park their asses right in the middle of a run! Just to "hang out and chillax, dudes". ;)

Re: Skiing/Snowboarding 09-10: Go West, Young Man!

I really really really really want to learn how to snowboard soon. I'm pretty determined actually. Just makes me mad that I have to drive for hours to find some sort of hill to go on lol

You're welcome for the whole concept of a "Shaped ski" :D :p

Umm, I'm AASI accredited... Just come down to the So. Wisconsin/Illinois area, and I'll teach you all you need to know...

Spraying them with snow and telling them to move their asses out of the way doesn't work either, at least with the losers up here :D

Psh, concurrent development of technology, someone would have figured it out anyway ;)

Because snowboarding is the "cool" thing to do. Although since freeskiing has taken huge strides in the past decade, it is starting to even back out a bit.

At Ripley I haven't really had a problem with boarders sitting in stupid places. Actually, above the jumps and other park features, I'd much rather see them sitting because that means there's a line and it's much less like that I'm going to get cut off on my in-run by some stupid punk.

This does remind me of a joke though:
How many snowboarders does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
17. 1 to screw in the lightbulb and 16 to sit in the landing.
