Sarah Murray, UMD Grad and Team Korea HC for 2018 Olympics To Coach DIII St. Mary's

This press release announcing Murray's hire includes tons of quotes including Crowell at UMD, Stafford from SSM where she won titles in HS, Jim Paek who she worked for coaching the South and later Unified Korea teams and the one I don't get the connection to: St. Scholastica Head Coach Jackie MacMillan. The only connection I see is MacMillan coached at SSM as she made her way through the coaching ranks...

I'm not sure where one might rank this compared to Darwitz going to Hamline, but it seems like another MIAC school has to decided to make a major upgrade in the coaching dept. On paper it's a vast improvement from the son of the men's HC.

They better be careful about getting too good.

Yes, you don't want to get booted out of your own conference for being too good! Lol. After watching the St. Thomas situation unfold, the "also-rans" of other D3 conferences are saying to themselves, "Why didn't we think of that?!" :D

Remarkable how well St. Thomas controlled the narrative and suckered normally intelligent people into this automatic go-to response.

Suppose you had weekly sailboat races on Lake Minnetonka with your friends Cord, Mac, Gus, Johnny, Ham, Carl, Ole, and a couple others. You all have Sunfishes, and you win about as often as the other guys. But then, one of your buddies, Thomas van Gazillian IV, gets a Hobie Cat and not only wins all of the races, but steals your girlfriend.

That is why the MIAC gave St Thomas the heave-ho. I was just making it up about the girlfriend.

With the resources they've decided they want to devote to athletics, UST really should move up to Div II.

...along with the huge (compared to the rest of the schools) enrollment, and the ability to get "Merit Scholarships" into the hands of athletes more readily, AND the million dollar marketing budget they have for sports, yes, they are playing a different game.

You feel for their hockey players, as that sport will experience the greatest early upheaval. If you're a freshman now at UST, ask yourself if you'll still be there when the school goes D1.

But this thread is about the St. Mary's hire, which was indeed an excellent one.

If you're a freshman now at UST, ask yourself if you'll still be there when the school goes D1.

Given the rules for upgrading from DIII to DII, no freshman currently at UST will still be there when the school goes DII, and in fact if they do transition, since the transition period is three years (or possibly 4 years), only freshmen when the transition starts would have a chance.

Re: Sarah Murray, UMD Grad and Team Korea HC for 2018 Olympics To Coach DIII St. Mary

All the D2 schools in Minnesota play D1 already. Inside info says UST is scrambling to get to D2 sooner than later, and have admitted they'll only play one more year in the MIAC if they get their way.

So as soon as the school goes D2, if they're going to keep playing hockey at all, they'll need to go D1 right away, which the NCAA would allow. Pretty sure NCAA won't allow them playing down. The rest of the programs will have that waiting period, but because there is no D2 hockey, they'll be D1. Now if they scrap that plan, and decide to stay D3, you're right. There's just a huge push from influential alum and boosters who want the school to move up. And I think they will eventually be wildly successful in D1.

Hockey is the one sport which might have an issue, at least temporarily.

Re: Sarah Murray, UMD Grad and Team Korea HC for 2018 Olympics To Coach DIII St. Mary

Before the hockey program can play DI, the school has to successfully complete the DIII to DII transition which takes a minimum of 3 years. Once they have full DII status, on the women's side they would automatically be eligible for the NC "division" because that is a combined DI/DII National Championship. On the Men's side it is a little messier, but DII schools in sports without a DII national championship can opt to play in a DI conference and be eligible.

Look how the angry St Olaf or other "poor MIAC Team" fan hijacked this thread to make it about how much he doesn't like St Thomas
