Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

Here is an Alberni Valley blog with some recent posts. There is a mention that Tironese assisted in the most recent game. Also a goal in an intrasquad scrimmage. A lineup shows that he is playing LW on the first line with a SLU(T) recruit at center.

Thanks RB-Some of this information is just difficult to find and appreciate when you post it.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

I don't recall if this was posted earlier from USHR about the Atlantic District Select Festival:
‘95s --

1. Drew Melanson, F—RPI recruit is an absolute stud and someone who has All-American college potential. The Delbarton star forward is a beautiful skater with superb puck skills. Was nursing an injury over the weekend, but was still in a league of his own. The 5’11” speedster projects to have a strong season next year, and we think he stands a good chance to be selected in the 2013 NHL draft.

(The May posts on USHR are now public.)

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

The BCHL isn't posting boxscores of exhibition games, but Alberni Valley lost 8-2 on Friday.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

Ahhhh... you know it's September when you start reading about recruits again and you can hear the sound of skates being sharpened. October can get here soon enough! Thanks, Ralph.

Has been our opinion for the past 2+ years. If he progresses as he could, we could all be in for a special time in Troy for some years to come. We have been fortunate as we gotten a chance to see him play in over 10 games over the years. Always unpredictable as to how well a kid can do when moving up to the Division I NCAA level-but if i was a betting man---I'd place a wager that he will do just fine.

First we will see how he does in the USHL which could be a bigger jump from HS than it will be from the USHL to RPI.

My major concern with him in the USHL is not how well he will play but can he withstand the bigger bodies hitting him without sustaining injury. Unless he fills out a bit more he will be playing against boys his size or larger almost all the time. At Delbarton that never was a problem-but NJ high school hockey is not in any way as combative as the USHL. Potential for injury will be far greater and more of a concern for me.

Good point. I expect that he will succeed.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

Coach Appert was out on the road recently doing some recruiting according to his twitter account. Good follow if your into the twitter thing.

It's a good time to list the recruting needs on this thread. All of the following is based upon no one leaving early.

We are graduating three forwards, one defenseman, and one goalie in the spring. Three forwards are already commited (Bourbonnias, DeVito, and Wood) and a possible fourth in Melanson. The consensus has been that Merriam will be replaced by a walk-on, so the need is one defenseman.

In 2014, we graduate three forwards and two defenseman. We have commitments from two forwards (Melanson and Tironese) and one defenseman (Manley). Even if Melanson arrives early, I think that the need is one forward and defenseman since we already have 16 forwards, more than our usual 15.

In total we need one forward, 2 dmen, and one goalie in the next two years. For 2015 everyone graduating must still be replaced.

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

re Appert's twitter.

Always great to see @DFS_Monty n see his Fighting Saints and we received a commitment from JP Montgomery for Fall of 2027 #goal scorer

It's good to see that we beat out Maine. :D

Re: RPI Recruit Thread 2012-13

I had mentioned in an earlier post that our list of recruits(for 2013 forward) seemed a tad small in stature. A quick look at the list for Cornell, Harvard and especially Princeton(for the same time period) shows quite a difference. Spoke with a Princeton staff member at dinner the other night who pointed out that their recruit list now boasts 9 players who were 6' or taller. Seems the above mentioned Ivies are bulking up a bit.

Besides for Burgdoerfer who rarely plays and Merriam who will probably be replaced by a walk-on, the seniors (Bailen, Lee, and O'Grady) aren't big either. I prefer talented big men to talented small men, but I prefer talented small men to not-talented big men. I am sure that SA and company are looking for more Zalewskis, but they are hard to come by.

Obviously we are trying to recruit talented players. Each school listed is doing the same thing. But for some reason they are finding or landing bigger bodies than we are right now. Not sure if this is a strategy that SA is keeping to or just some sort of statistical aberration. We have recruited some size in the past few years and on first blush it just stands out a bit that the list for the future is much smaller.
