RPI Engineers 2016-2017: 10 Years on

The Engineers are coming off their tenth season in the ECAC and with some strong parallels with the RPI men's team which has just completed its 10th season under Appert. The women bounced back from their worst season in the ECAC ('13-'14 was the second worst for the men under Appert) and in both cases much of the credit for the recovery has to go to strong goaltending. This year, both teams achieved modest milestones: the women had an 'average' year (.397 win % vs. .398 ave over 10 yrs) and made it back into the playoffs, but just barely; the men climbed back over .500 for the first time in 4 yrs and advanced to the second round of playoffs (in men's hockey, for reasons I will never comprehend, everyone gets into the first round of playoffs). RPI fans have to be modestly pleased with the improvement in both teams, but let's face it, .400 hockey for the women and .500 hockey for the men will never be enough to meet expectations at RPI. The other important parallel between the two teams is that they both played a hard-working and entertaining brand of hockey this year.

Looking forward, the brightest spot for the women's team is that they have 3 more years of Lovisa Selander around whom to build a more competitive team...whereas the men may lose Kasdorf to the Sabres. I hope to find time to do a more detailed look at what the women will gain and lose from the roster next year, but in the meantime I'm looking forward to watching the NCAA final four.

That leaves Iwanski and Orosz among the recruits expected in the fall.

Re: RPI Engineers 2016-2017: 10 Years on

Josefine Hansen is currently playing on the Danish team in this year's Women's Div 1A World Championship. http://www.iihf.com/competition/553/statistics/

They list her as still playing for SSM http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/553/IHW553000_33_2_0_DEN.pdf.

JH was named Denmark's Best Player today despite having no points today in a 3-2 win over Norway. (See the second page of the boxscore http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/553/IHW553912_74_3_0.pdf. BP next to her name means Best Player.)

Best Player summary: http://stats.iihf.com/Hydra/553/IHW553000_85K_11_0.pdf.

Re: RPI Engineers 2016-2017: 10 Years on

from the directory

Name: Blake Maria Orosz
Class: First-Year Student
Curriculum: Business and Management

That leaves Kirsten Iwanski among the known 2016 recruits.

They made it sound like se was named Denmark's best D, not the entire tournament. Also it isn't clear that this was the second tier tournament.

Yes, best D in the tier 2 tournament. Great honour.

It still doesn't say that this was the 2nd tier championship, but it does say she was named the tournament's best D.

RPI recruit Sabrina Repaci and the Toronto Aeros won the Ontario Provincial championship at the Intermediate AA level. I couldn't find any stats on line. (I did get about 100 tweets. :) )

The Aeros were 9-2 in the playoffs (GF/GA were 31/14). Repaci had 5 assists and 12 PIM.

That was the PWHL playoffs. The Provincials championship is something else run by the OWHA and contains non-PWHL teams. The Aeros won both. Here is one of several tweets I received mentioning both.

Thanks Ralph...I was unaware that there was anything beyond the PWHL playoffs...and I still don't know what these provincial championships were all about or what teams (other than PWHL teams) would have been involved. Tried to find info online but nothing.

I found the team records at http://owha.pointstreaksites.com/view/owha/events-416/provincials-1 (click Intermediate AA) which shows their record was 5-0-1 but no stats. Somewhere I also found the scores of each game.
