RPI 2025 Off-Season: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23 years without a conference semifinal appearance. Still waiting for my first one since I enrolled. At this point it's hard to see it ever happening. Smith out.

Wasn’t able to watch the game tonight. I just got back and didn’t even look up the score. I knew the presence or absence of this thread would tell me all I needed to know. Ralph is nothing if not fast and dependable.

As for Dave, we’ll know this week. If he makes it to the weekend he’s coming back. I expect an announcement by Tuesday.

They have some good players but not enough to put together 3 solid periods and I think a major change needs to happen just to get them to relevancy much less the top of the ECAC.

I think Smith needs to go given his .390 win percentage over the last 7 seasons.

If Smith is gone and I expect that he is, I have some questions.
What happens to is recruits?
What about the portal, has he been in contact with any of those players?
And what about the players on the team now that he brought in?
I know that we have been in this situation before, but I am getting old and can't remember everything anymore.

And Ralph, thanks for the recognition.

Having been a glutton for punishment the past several years i suppose i will simply just keep following along. Obvious need is defense, both quality recruits and more importantly, coaching a team into playing total team defense. Whether it be 5 on 5 or short handed it all comes down to playing systematic and coordinated defense. We cannot be allowing almost 30% of opponent's power plays to score and we cannot continue to allow almost 4 goals per game and think we can have a winning record. Since this has now been happening over several different recruit years coming in - the problem is not the boys (we already knew that). I don't profess to know exactly what the problem or problems are and all i want is for them to be dealt with. Success breeds success and if we are not able to achieve some then we will just continue to experience what we have been seeing (if not worse).

DrD,

I think that Gilson?, Goffredo, Maguire, Matta, Ozolins, and Smolinski are defensemen who are expected to come back. That is not much and not all are that good. Recruits I expect in the fall are Lemieux and Klassek. Adrian and Hilditch may not show up until 2026 due to long injuries. Also Hansom. I don't expect Matthews and Chingwaru this year.

Most of that comes down to whoever the next head coach will be. Players might be a little less likely to leave with new major junior rules. But the coaching staff will want to get his players in as well. A lot of moving parts

Agree with this and would add the fate of incoming recruits would also depend on a) the pace of hiring a new boss and b) who the new boss would be. If it's May 1st and we don't have a coach, then all bets are off....on many fronts.

agreed! They might wait till the season over or they have a candidate in mind who will not be in the tournament. I still say make a run at Kirk. He’s an awesome coach. Every stop of the way he’s won. He currently has Wilkes barre penguins in contention. Lang from AIC is another one.

Every year that I go to Lake Placid, I see the same group of RPI fans up there for Championship Weekend. They say they go regardless of who is playing. I keep hoping, for their sake, one of these years they'll actually get to see their beloved Engineers play for the title.

They're good fans too. I always look for them at LP and on my yearly trip to Troy.

Well this is it I believe the future of RPI hockey as a D1 program hangs in the balance. Make no mistake the currant AD inherited this dumpster fire Lee McElroy ruined this program and I have no idea what's taken place behind the scenes but the outward inaction has been disappointing to say the least if She decides to make a change and let's the Parker Executive Search Group within 1000mi of the fieldhouse its over so I guess we can keep our fingers crossed and hope to God she has the chops to get this done I have my doubts but I will gladly be wrong.

Lang will almost definitely land a new job. The work he did at AIC was nothing short of incredible. They missed Kirk in my opinion, he’s a half step from the NHL now

Lang is a solid choice. You’re probably right with Kirk but if he takes the interview I think we have a good shot. Bill riga would be another one. He’s built holy cross into a very good team. Idk I certainly hope we hear some of these names and others.

Lol what’s wrong Parker executive search didn’t blow you away last time? Instead of listening to alumni and fans etc… they hired these clowns to give them a list of coaches? Makes sense tho McElroy admitted he knows nothing about hockey that’s why he hired a firm that knows nothing about hockey.

Just throwing this out there for discussion purposes only. What about Peter MacArthur with the Adirondack Thunder? Played at BU, so the connection with Dr. Bowers is there, and bonus, he’s from the area so presumably he knows what recruiting to it would be like. Would being a HC at a DI college team like RPI be a step up from the ECHL though?

I've always felt that RPI could resurrect their program by trying to join Hockey East. They are a natural fit geographically even lesser out of the footprint than UVM or Maine, have the arena size and fanbase and history. The sense that they want to remain locked in with the ECAC and particularly the Ivies holds them back from going there. That supposed perceived prestige is detrimental to the program. Hockey East is a huge step up in play and has room for one more team and Holy Cross or Sacred Heart seem to be the most inspired to try to get there. Even Bentley and Stonehill may be options. Quinnipiac likes being the top dog in the ECAC and does not want to get involved. Maybe if RPI wants to invest in their program they should take a chance and consider this move.

Thanks for the list Ralph. Not very encouraging but actually better than I thought. i suppose I can stop sharpening the scalpel now that I was going to use to cut my throat and put it back into my bag!!
