Rivier University Hockey?

I've seen some recruiting announcements over the past months on socials so, if the Jeff Cox tweet pans out (he's generally pretty credible so I assume it will), Sorenson has already done the roster building and I assume him and the women's coach have already begun ordering equipment, jerseys, ice schedules, etc... so it should be an opportunity for a new coach to come into the program, complete any of the unfinished business and then get the student-athletes on-campus this fall. There's still time to hire a new HC and any assistants and be ready for October. It's a win for Rivier that he's not leaving for another D3 job so the risk of recruits following him is lower since he's joining a DI staff.

Well sure, but one would have to wonder if the players he recruited will now de-commit and purse or be pursued for other options which could make it very difficult for a new coach coming in. It must be hard enough anyway to recruit players for a new program with no history and no conference. I would wonder if Rivier might be considering pushing the launch back a year while at the same time trying to find someone willing to make a long term coaching commitment.

I don’t think that's likely to happen in a mass exodus. It could happen to an isolated player who might decided to decommit and go to a program with another coach they established a good relationship to during recruiting. I think it’s going to be minimized because, like I mentioned, Sorenson isn’t leaving for another D3 job; plus it’s late in the recruiting cycle and most schools aren’t actively recruiting Class of 2025; at a lot of schools those students already have schedules and are going through enrollment checklists to move-in in August; and also they still have program support and a women’s coach who could step in and serve as interim point of contact for the program during the summer getting final transcripts and enrollment documents from the incoming class.

I had heard this last week, it feels like a weak move by Sorenson. No blame on him going for a DI job, but if he wasn't committed to building why'd he take the Rivier job. At least stick around and see the job through.

Okay...if you say so.

I agree, and think it is a risk when a school just staring a program hires a young HC with limited experience because they are cheaper than others. There is nothing wrong with wanting to move up but there isn't anything wrong with fulfilling commitments either and establishing a reputation for doing so.

Yes, it is nothing if not unprofessional. But I think hiring a young guy is smart. Sure he is cheaper - but you also hope to hire someone who is interested in building something new. The older guys are more likely to want to jump at the next opportunity IMO. So, as an alum it is disappointing to see this happen.

I know almost nothing about DIII - but not that they have a coach in place, it is safe to assume this year's schedule will be independent? Could they announce a conference affiliation for 2022-2023 this summer? When should that be something that would be announced?

Yes...I didn't see Rivier listed on Nichols schedule. They will likely play Anna Maria due to the fact they are in the same conference in other sports.
