RIP Matt Smith: Hockey has lost a friend

theprofromdover

The Original Dope Detector
Matt Smith, age 44, passed away from melanoma on Thursday. Matt was a long-time referee and lineman. He worked both the ECAC and Hockey East leagues. He also worked the 2001 National Championship game between Boston College and North Dakota as well as a number of Division III championships, Beanpots and playoffs.

In the real world, Smitty was a Danvers firefighter. He is survived by his son Shane, age 12, and his wife Megan.

Smitty was one of the funniest people I've ever known. If he was at a Frozen Four you wanted to find his table. It was easy to find because that's where the loudest laughs were coming from. He'll be missed by all and there will be one grand toast to him in Tampa.
