Red River catfishing?

johnnyredshoes

Die-hard Huskies fan since '91
Just looking for a little information from anyone about fishing catfish on the Red River. I am an avid outdoorsman and fish pretty much whenever I can, and have been looking into heading up there and giving it a shot. I catch a lot of the 7-10 pound range around home, but want to hook into something a little bigger.

If possible, I would like to avoid going through a guide service, so I am just looking for some info. when is the best time of year to go? is there decent and accessible places to fish from shore, or is a boat needed? just stuff like that.

I am also interested in fishing flatheads on the minnesota or mississippi.

Re: Red River catfishing?

I have not fished for cats in over 20 years on the Red. I never hooked into the big one. In my day we would fish the Country Club with shrimp from about 10 pm to 4 AM. It is North Dakota, so fishing the banks is easy.

Just be careful...there may still be some goalies floating around in there from the Blais Era of Sioux Hockey...has anyone seen Josh Sievbida since 2003? :D :p

Too bad johnny said he wants to avoid a guide service. With the way Lucia destroyed so many promising player's NHL careers at least one of them is probably a fishing guide now.

When I was a kid, we used to fish the banks under the bridges. You could pull some fairly large catfish out. Large enough that you would need a hacksaw to take off their heads. I have no idea if those spots are any good these days.
