Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

The Freds

Goin' Up?
Okay, so maybe it isn't summer yet, but one can hope. Plus the college hockey season ends for everyone this weekend. Just drove by the Xcel Energy Center and there are college hockey jerseys hanging up in the lobby. I wonder if PC is there this year?

Who will it be?
  • Bavis?
  • Bennett?
  • Cavanaugh?
  • Lassonde?
  • Montgomery?
  • Peters?
  • Tremblay?
  • Umile?
  • Whitehead?
  • York?
Who else has been mentioned?

The adventures continue.

The hockey guy is out there ask him and let us know !!!!! Enjoy and BOOO Michigan for me

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

Nice piece in the Globe today on ND's Joe Lavin. Lavin takes the high road about his experience at PC and doesn't bury the coach or school but it does show that there was something wrong with the program for some time.

Great kid. I liked him as a Friar and I'm sorry that it didn't work out for him at PC.

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

Herald mentions Cavanaugh, Quinn as 2 favs, Lehman and Bennett as outside looking in

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

np

word is jim hughes is making a late bid as well

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

any of the ones mentioned are quality coaches and people. It does show how highly regarded the PC program is.
All have had success and will bring credibility and a buzz. I would guess new recruits would take a serious look at PC as well as coaches from USHL and BCHL, where PC had trouble pulling from. All have great connections

I would guess burke and wilson will be now nudging for hughes.

would guess either quinn, cavanaugh or bennett. hopefully bennett

bennett has recruited the type of players pc needs, the others mostly dealt with the big names

all is good no matter who gets it

100%

I don't think that I'd like to see Quinn get the job over Cavanaugh and Bennett but all are good choices.
I'd like to see Cavanaugh but would be happy with Rick Bennett if Cavanaugh doesn't take the job.

Quinn is solid and would be my third choice and I he too would be strong IMO. As a side, Hughes in the mix is interesting.

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

holy moly are you two actually agreeing?!:confused:
I want Bennett, but we'll see what happens.

Just to clarify, does this include Cav? You had no problem mentioning a while back that there's a reason he's been passed over before

Certainly on this and probably on a bunch of other things too. Life's too short. I'm sure he and I would get along fine in real life and I don't mean any of the things I say about him. I'm gonna stop and I'm sure that he will as well. If not....I'm still gonna stop.

Carrying on the way we have makes us both look like d bags. I saw it earlier on another thread and was embarrassed because me and HD have done that.
Like I said, he's probably a decent guy who loves to bust stones. I know someone else like that. ;)

Re: Providence College Summer 2011: The Hockey Guy Adventures

IF it is Bennett does he keep the current assistants...if Cavanaugh does he bring in some off the York coaching tree? How important is a completely new start?

re: Cav

are you talking about bringing Greg Brown? No way would Brown leave BC for a similar position at PC. In fact, he would most likely be elevated to associate head coach at BC. Or are you talking about someone like Scott Paluch? Was a great recruiter/associate head coach at BC before getting the Bowling Green job. Didn't work out for him there, but not an easy place to win at.

Only knock there is people feel his long term goal is BC, BC and BC. that will simply take another job to get there as BC will want a new HC with HC experience. Similar to Leehman who has been rumored to be most interested in Harvard job. Him and Sneddan. Looks though that TD is safe there after a nice finish last season

He in all seriousness is the HC at BC and if he gets the job, it would be great for PC. Just like Bennett, Quinn and the others would

Simply shows what the coaches see PC as a program, if you have these type of quality canidates vying for the job.

I would still expect to see him want the Northeastern job more if that opens up

Even the Peters guy who looks to be a long shot has a great track record.

I know it's all sunshine and lollipops with you, but let's be honest. PC is no longer "highly regarded" as a hockey program -- and hasn't been for a long, LONG time. In 1990 they might have been "highly regarded", but now? Why would they be? This is a REBUILDING job in every way, shape and form. This program is at the bottom of the conference, has been for several years running and very likely is going to be next year too, regardless of who comes in to coach. The new coach is going to have to work their tail off to make it "highly regarded" again, and I'm sure they are completely aware of what they'll be up against. It's going to be like starting over at a place where nobody has been able to consistently win in almost 2 decades.

On the flip side, PC is a fine school, and a HOCKEY EAST program, which instantly makes the job attractive enough to warrant interest. A lot of guys would be interested in coaching in this league regardless of the circumstance. Winning in this conference means a whole heck of a lot more than winning tons of games like Yale and Union did in the ECAC, not scheduling anyone and then being quickly ousted in the NCAAs. If the new coach can turn PC around, that would be a massive accomplishment and something neither of the prior two coaches were able to do. Why not go for it, try and make a name for yourself and do it in one of the best conferences in the country (some years THE best)? It's a low-expectation, high-reward kind of position now (lest any of us here expect a return to the Garden anytime soon; I'm guessing that's not the case). If the new coach succeeds, fantastic! If not, then neither of the prior guys did either.

So I'm not surprised someone is interested in this job, and maybe Driscoll is serious this time about actually improving the program, renovating the facility, and on and on -- but like Cavbim says, I'll believe it when we see it.

I was with you until this. Come on, all head coaches delegate responsibilities. Greg Brown works with the defensemen and Cav runs the PP. Cav is probably heavily involved in recruiting as well, but whenever I see someone teaching on the bench...it's York. IMO, the head coach is only as strong as his assistants anyway. It has to be a collective effort.
