Here we go. New season long thread for all things Friars hockey.
New faces: Everett Baldwin, JJ Monteiro, Blake Zielinski, Ryder Cali, Carter Klippenstein, Cade Christenson (transfer), Ben Hrebik, and Thomas Vandenberg
Anybody I missed? I feel like PC got a recent-late commit and I can't remember his name for the life of me.
Out: Philip Svedeback (graduated), Roger McQueen (signed pro), Hudson Malinoski (transfer to UND), Bales (transferred), Geno McEnery (I think?), Brendan Ross (transfer), Kale McCallum (grad/turned pro), Michael Simpson (transfer)
Anybody I missed?
Losing McQueen hurts, but it had to be expected. Malinoski had an up and down season last year. The replacements should hopefully mesh a little quicker than last year's team did. No question on who the Goalie-1 is this year. It's Parsons job to lose, but with a solid second option (much like last year) I think this is their biggest strength.
They have eight on defense, nine if that late addition is for this year. One problem exists though. They have fifteen forwards and can play a max of 13 per game. Who do you leave off? If you look at last year's roster Ross and McEnery rarely saw ice time, and this is a really deep group of forwards. I suppose added depth is a good problem to have - let it sort itself out and lose Levens, Gamache and Adams to graduation to take that number down to 12. You have to assume Mustard turns pro after another strong season. Sawyer, possibly, too. And then you go from having 15 forwards to 11, not including any incoming freshmen or transfers.
First up is the exhibition game October2 with Stonehill. Then a back to back at home with the St. Larry's and Clarkson.
Out-of-conference games, including the two opening weekend: At Union and Quinnipiac in October. The latter an NCAA tourney rematch that... didn't go so great last time. Q is loaded with talent and will (likely) dominate the ECAC. Friendship Four the end of November with UMD and UConn/Colgate, St. Thomas repaying for hosting last year with games on New Year's Day and the 2nd at Schneider, Mayor's Cup game on Groundhog Day on home ice, then Long Island for 1 at the end of the week at home.
Do I see this a tough OOC schedule? It's balanced with top-end teams (UMD and QU), then you got what should be easier games with St. Larry and Brown on the schedule.
Conference opponents didn't take the summer off making some big moves: BU, BC, UMass all should compete for the top spot in HE. Does anybody not named PC take a step back?
Minor edit as I excluded Gamache originally. So the math should math, and this year's forwards should go from 15 down to 11 with graduates. If KIvioja decides to leave after junior year that brings it down to 10 for next year.
