The Athletic (subscription required) has some info on proposed changes.
First, transfer portal changes proposed by the D1 council:
1) Reduce the window for any player to enter the portal from 60 days after the release of the tournament bracket to 30. They note most players entered in the first 30 days of the 60 day windows anyway.
2) A player who has already transferred can remain on scholarship after quitting the team if there was a coaching change at their second school. This would not count toward the scholarship limit of the team. This seems to be aimed at mitigating the losses of a player who gets burned twice without allowing musical chairs of a second transfer...
Proposed NCAA sports betting punishments:
-Permanent loss of eligibility if the student attempted to influence the results of their own game for betting purposes, OR provided insider info to someone for betting purposes. EDIT: ESPN reports that permanent loss of eligibility is also the punishment for a student athlete who bets on any game their institution participated in regardless of if they play on that team. So a Penn State women's hockey player could get banned for life if they bet on a PSU football game.
-50% of a season loss of eligibility, plus mandatory education, for wagering on another school in the same NCAA sport the student plays
- A sliding scale of punishments for ALL other sports betting (on pro games or a different NCAA sport)… mandatory education if wager $200 or less, 10% of a season if wagered $201-500, 30% of a season if wagered $501-800. For wagered amount greater than 800, an NCAA panel will determine punishment, up to an including permanent loss of eligibility.
Seems fair to me on both accounts...anyone see potential problems/exploits?
