Those people must hate Costco.
Why do they shop there if receipt checks are such a big deal? Or are these the same people who are scared of their info being stolen if they buy from Amazon online?

Its usually not a liberty thing to these folks but rather they feel like they're being thieved of their time... I'm not a fan of a geriatric checking my bag (which I believe has never happened to me), but for God's sake, is it such a horrible thing if a company has a semi-reasonable theft prevention system.
I use Bill Maher as my measuring stick of these people... Bill Maher is against people infringing on his freedom but takes any thing that threatens his status in society incredibly seriously and he considers infringing on other people's freedoms to be A-OK...in the end its about him and his own validation at the expense of all others... I feel that these people who are up in arms about the bag-checkers fall into this class.
If the geriatrics bother you that much there are other ways to buy goods and services. You don't need a class action 'cause they broke your heart.

Actually no, they acknowledge that when you become a member at Costco or the like, your membership agreement includes an express grant of consent to have your receipt checked on the way out.

How does this have "NOTHING" to do wtih the law? He clearly stated his understanding of the law, whether he was right or not is not something I can stand upon as I do not know Virginia law. In fact, the Wal-Mart employee not allowing him to leave the store without specific knowledge that this man was attempting theft is in direct violation of the law. When I worked retail during high school and college, such things were pounded into our heads many times over.
In fact, it's an excellent pyschology case in regards to the woman behind him taking out her wrath on the man as, like the man said, there were two sets of doors from which she could exit the store. Rather than trying to go through the other set, she felt the need to wait for this situation to resolve rather than expending the marginal amount of extra time to use another exit. Add to that, she egged on this guy because Wal-Mart chose to imbue Tony with some minimal level of authority, authority for which they may not have fully trained him.
