Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

Alien With an Attitude
Might as well get things going with this news announced today.

Gardiner is the brother of former Badger and current Maple Leaf Jake Gardiner.

Forward Max Gardiner (Deephaven, Minn.), a 2010 National Hockey League draft choice, and defenseman Joseph Lordo (St. Louis, Mo.) have been added to the 2012-13 roster for the Penn State men's hockey team, head coach Guy Gadowsky announced Thursday.

The St. Louis Blues' third-round selection (74th overall) in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Gardiner competed for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League in 2011-12. The Deephaven, Minn., native collected 26 points (12g, 14a) in 50 regular-season games and added four points (1g, 3a) in five playoff games. Prior to his time with Dubuque, Gardiner spent the 2010-11 season at the University of Minnesota, where he recorded three points (1g, 2a) in 17 games.

In 2011-12, Lordo concluded his second season a member of the USHL's Sioux Falls Stampede. The St. Louis, Mo., native, who served as team captain, led his team's defensemen with 21 points (3g, 18a) in 58 games. The blueliner skated in 117 career regular-season games for Sioux Falls and collected 31 points (6g, 25a). In 2010-11, he added four points (3g, 1a) in 10 playoff games.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

Looks like the approach to recruiting is changing already. Its moving from a Penn centric approach to more of a national approach. Good to see D1 is changing things already.

That actually started with this year's team. Next year it goes international with recruits from Canada coming in.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

So I'm not trying to start anything here but how do you think PSU will do once they go D1? Michigan Lacrosse (yea I know, Lacrosse) just went D1 this year after absolutely dominating the Club level. They won multiple National Championships as a Club team but they have 1 win this year after going D1. They are 1-12 with 1 game remaining, that game is against North Carolina so chalk up 1-13 right now. But seriously, how well do you think PSU will do their first year of D-1 Hockey?

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

They're getting decent talent (to keep your question relevant to the thread), but I'm sure it will be a slow start to some extent.

They will probably get some wins, maybe between 5 to 10 wins for the first year, i expect the second year in D-1 that they will improve greatly!! Will be interesting to see them play!!

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

Naturally, I'm somewhat biased, so take this as you will.

They'll take their lumps some nights but overall I think they will surprise more than a few people.

One thing is for certain, they won't be out-coached on most nights.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

They are going to play some club teams and at least one Div 3 teams, so they should be able to get some wins on the record. In terms of the Div 1 competition, they'll probably lose most of the games, but I'm expecting more 4-1 type losses as opposed to 11-0 against the full scholarship teams. Even if the players they are bringing in are competitive, they'll lack the depth to hang with teams for full games.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

I had thought the Big Ten had a rule against transfering to another Big Ten school.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

No offense PSU fans, but you're probably going to be the B1G door mat for a while. I just hope your able to draw more than OSU after the honeymoon phase.

I had thought the Big Ten had a rule against transfering to another Big Ten school.

I think that rule had to do with receiving scholarships from another Big Ten school, but I believe that rule has been relaxed so that Gardner can only receive 2 years of scholarship money as opposed to the 3 years of eligibility he has left.

Once Gardner left the school and played in the USHL for a year, I'm not sure that UMN has any control over where he goes because he didn't directly transfer to another school and spend his transfer year there.

Also, next year PSU will be playing an indie schedule in and then he will be two years removed from Minnesota. IMO, I don't have a problem with it.

Re: Penn State Recruiting Thread - Let the Fun Begin

Big ten rules are big ten rules .... They don't relax things

Except that the Big Ten has no rules preventing transferring within the conference only limits on financial aid and eligibility.

Intraconference Transfer Rules.

1. Pre-Matriculation. A prospective student-athlete who has signed a tender from a Conference institution and has not yet triggered transfer status per NCAA Bylaw 14.5.2 (conditions affecting transfer status), is subject to the following intraconference transfer requirements:

a. Signed National Letter of Intent. A prospective student-athlete who signs a valid National Letter of Intent (NLI) with a Conference institution but subsequently enrolls at an alternate Big Ten institution shall be required to complete one (1) full year of residence at the alternate (i.e., certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports. These penalties shall be applied regardless of any decision made by the NLI Steering Committee on behalf of the prospective student-athlete.

1. Exception - Complete Release by Signing Institution. If the Big Ten institution at which the prospective student-athlete originally signed the NLI grants a "Complete Release" from the NLI, the prospect shall be permitted to enroll at any other Conference institution without penalty.

2. Exception - NLI Declared Null and Void. Should the NLI become null and void prior to the prospective student-athlete's matriculation, the prospective student-athlete shall be free to enroll at any other Conference institution without penalty.

b. Signed Tender without National Letter of Intent. A prospective student-athlete that signs a valid tender with a Conference institution but subsequently enrolls at an alternate Big Ten institution shall be required to complete one (1) full academic year of residence at the alternate (i.e.,
certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one
(1) season of eligibility in all sports. Upon mutual agreement of the two involved Conference institutions, this penalty shall be waived by the Chair of the Academics and Eligibility Subcommittee.

2. Post Matriculation. A student-athlete that has signed a tender from a Conference institution and has triggered transfer status per NCAA Bylaw 14.5.2 (conditions affecting transfer status), may not represent an alternate Big Ten institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one (1) full academic year of residence at the alternate (i.e.,
certifying) Big Ten institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports.

3. Pre- and Post-Matriculation Exceptions

a. Cancellation of Tender Due to Inadmissibility. When a prospective student-athlete is inadmissible to the institution for which a tender has been accepted, the tender shall be considered null and void and the intraconference transfer penalty does not apply.

b. Dropped Sport. When a Conference institution drops the student-athlete's sport in which the student-athlete has participated, the intraconference penalty does not apply.

I see little reason for the Gophers to not grant a full release to any player who has already left the program and wants to attend PSU.

Thanks, that cleared it up. I hope Max the best. My niece, a goalie, used to see him at the local rinks in high school.
