Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

Re: Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

I did not know: Bret McKenzie (of Flight of the Conchords) was the music supervisor for The Muppets, and wrote "Man or Muppet", one of the (only two?) nominees for Best Original Song.

That list does seem short to me, too. Granted, I'm not a guy who sees a lot of movies when they're released anymore, but given how many hundreds are released each year, how can there only be two original songs worthy of being nominated?

Re: Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

Must be to make up for that Get Him To The Greek snub.

http://oscar.go.com/nominees

My daughter says, "he's not funny now that's he not fat."

I actually have no idea whether he's still fat or funny, but I like Get Him to the Greek, personally.

The Oscars site is more evidence that every site needs a "strip out all the goo and just give me a ****ing list" mode.

It's the way the nomination process is, there probably other songs on nomination ballots, but they didn't get enough votes to meet the threshold for a nomination.

Edit: And I'm disappointed Armie Hammer didn't get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for J. Edgar. He was fantastic.

Re: Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

Rooney is going to get screwed out of an Oscar. Dam you, Meryl (although I haven't see "The Iron Lady," because I heard it was a sh* movie with Streep having an outstanding performance).

And very surprised that "The Girl With..." didn't even make the cut for Best Picture.

Michelle Williams should get the Best Actress award and she still might. Meryl was evidently very good but the movie she was in overall sucked. Did not see "The Girl With..." yet but first timers don't usually get the big award.

Re: Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

I was surprised by all the Moneyball love. Perfectly ordinary movie -- nothing to dislike about it -- but Best Actor and Best Picture nominations? Come on.

Also if I could go back in time I'd kill John Williams before Hitler.

It really should be Viola Davis' award to win.

I've heard that as well. I'd have no problem with that. This year could be a lot like 1950 where Gloria Swanson should have won, everyone though Bette Davis was going to win, and in swooped Judy Holliday to win the award.

1950 Best Actress Nominees

Winnner -JUDY HOLLIDAY in "Born Yesterday", Anne Baxter in "All About Eve", Bette Davis in "All About Eve", Eleanor Parker in "Caged", Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard"

Great reference, but wrong premise.

Anne Baxter not getting that Oscar was criminal. Swanson and Davis were scenery chewers in those roles; she acted.

Two other things: (1) How many times does a comedienne beat a dramatic role for best actress? (2) What the heck was "Caged"? Sounds like Ilsa: "She Wolf of the SS."

Evidently Sacha Baron Cohen's tickets have been revoked until he agrees to not come dressed as the dictator.

Agreed on Anne Baxter. And agree also about dramatic roles virtually always winning over comedic ones. First timers do not often win (otherwise Bette Midler for The Rose should have been a no brainer) unless the Academy is trying to make a statement. They are especially good at doing that in their choice of supporting Actor or Actress. I tend to watch out of habit because both Jenny and I are old time movie buffs but each year it becomes even more obvious that the awards are not much more than an advertising opportunity for the industry.

Re: Oscars 2012: Jonah Hill... Oscar Nominee?

Scanning over Kepler's list, I'm actually amazed by how few of these movies I have seen. I count two. I have seen the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, so maybe 2+, but I don't think that counts even for a +

The original is a little more basic. The new one is glossier in production, but grittier in content.

I actually would like to see the remake. There were one or two things that I wished had not been left out of the movie (I can't remember what anymore) and I'm curious about this one.

They do have the extended versions of the original trilogy on Amazon. That version is more like the American one, with more on the subplot with Mikael/editor and such.
