I did not know: Bret McKenzie (of Flight of the Conchords) was the music supervisor for The Muppets, and wrote "Man or Muppet", one of the (only two?) nominees for Best Original Song.

That list does seem short to me, too. Granted, I'm not a guy who sees a lot of movies when they're released anymore, but given how many hundreds are released each year, how can there only be two original songs worthy of being nominated?

It's the way the nomination process is, there probably other songs on nomination ballots, but they didn't get enough votes to meet the threshold for a nomination.

Edit: And I'm disappointed Armie Hammer didn't get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for J. Edgar. He was fantastic.

Agreed on Anne Baxter. And agree also about dramatic roles virtually always winning over comedic ones. First timers do not often win (otherwise Bette Midler for The Rose should have been a no brainer) unless the Academy is trying to make a statement. They are especially good at doing that in their choice of supporting Actor or Actress. I tend to watch out of habit because both Jenny and I are old time movie buffs but each year it becomes even more obvious that the awards are not much more than an advertising opportunity for the industry.

The original is a little more basic. The new one is glossier in production, but grittier in content.

They do have the extended versions of the original trilogy on Amazon. That version is more like the American one, with more on the subplot with Mikael/editor and such.
