Northeastern 2025-26: After Hours at the Old Barn

UMass just released their schedule. Four games against Northeastern- all at Mullins.

Is Northeastern just giving up on any home games this season? Or did the dates with UMass just not work out for whatever reason? I get that maybe other hockey east schools aren’t willing to work with renting out their rinks but if Stonehill figured out the Bruins practice facility I’d think Northeastern could figure out something for 12 nights or however many home conference games there are.

My understanding is Warrior is not an option at least for NU Hockey East home games because Hockey East has certain requirements for video replay angles + ability to livestream games on ESPN+ that warrior does not meet. Personally I'd rather see this waived so NU can play some home games closer to their fans but I guess that's the situation.

Additionally, seating capacity at Warrior is only ~700. That might be enough for Stonehill but not even close for HEA games. I'm guessing that the venue scheduling issues were with WBA, Bright-Landry, and Bentley, the designated "home" rinks until the new building opens in 2028 (hopefully). The ultimate road trip: Even the home games will be away games.

JMHO, but i won't be surprised if they just play all on the road the next two years. It would make sense as an option to scheduling "home" games.

1. Eliminates scheduling headaches completely for NU and multiple other local schools.
2. Gives the opponents an additional home game (or two, in the case of UMass), but gives us the NPI bonus for road wins the next couple of years. (if NCAA would allows this?).
3. If HEA allows this, and teams are willing, agree to pay us back with all HEA home games in years 1 and 2 of the NUMAF. Show off the new crib, generate some revenue.
4. Gives the visitors the NPI benefit we got on the road for a couple of years.

On the surface, this schedule seems completely unfair. It might be partially balanced if UMass would split the gate with us. Their large capacity and attendance would probably exceed what we would have generated at Matthews. Additionally they should pick up our expenses for the extra trip to Amherst.
Another possibility is that the schedule will be accurate “date wise”, but the alternate locations are still being negotiated.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that he UMass schedule is correct and all four games are in Amherst.

Last year, the two schools played a non conference game at Matthews (last shut out ever there by UMass goalie Jackson Irving). This was to make up for both schools losing an OOC game against AIC. One of the four is OOC. I assume a return game? So whatever NU did for UMass last year for that OOC game (splitting the gate/paying for the extra expenses as you put it), I assume UMass will do the same.

For the conference games, I didn’t consider who was paying for what as I really don’t care, but as you bring it up. I’m having a bit of trouble understanding why if NU can’t find a place to host, then UMass needs to give them money. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Isn’t NU effectively using the Mullins as their home rink for that game? Usually when you use someone else’s property you give them money, not the other way around. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
