A 'monster' great white shark measuring up to 20 ft long is on the prowl off a popular Queensland beach, according to officials.

Swimmers were warned to stay out of the water off Stradbroke Island after the shark mauled another smaller great white which had been hooked on a baited drum line.

The 10-foot great white was almost bitten in half.

I just... I can't put it together to think of how big that shark would be. Ye gods.

My lord 20 feet long...probably 2-3 tons...crikey that is just massive!

Shark Week 2010 is gonna be EPIC (imagine a shark that size jumping out of the water )

Handyman has it. Jon's Roboshark would take this "monster" shark out - no problem.

Unfortunately, as Raceboarder said someone will hunt it down and kill it so they can get their name in the paper.

Too bad this isn't shark week

Frank Mundus was the real life shark hunter that the character Quint in Jaws was based on. He and another guy caught a 21', 3,400# great white off Montauk in the mid 80's.

I've had a 20' pilot whale come up alongside my former 20' boat and while very cool, was a bit nerve-racking. Having something that large with a set of choppers that could take the engine and back of the boat off with one bite come that close is simply frightening.

I'm glad there are signs of super sharks. It means the species are not as close to extinction anymore.

Not really, just means that one or two are living to full maturity, so the ones that don't make it are closer to adolescence. It'd almost be better to get rid of the really really big sharks than the ones who are just starting to make little baby sharks.

Nevermind that it's not good to go off and hunt the big impressive sharks at all. Or put up nets so surfer/swimmer ****** bags can feel safe. Not like it's more likely for them to be struck by lightning driving their car to the beach in the middle of a fatal accident than to be attacked by a shark or anything.

When I was doing the radio show, we interviewed him - that guy is a pretty amazing piece of work and I say that with reverence. Fishermen do tell the best stories but his stories with photos attached to everything is really amazing.
