New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Well, can't really complain too much about losing the ALCS, Texas clearly deserved it. Now we move forward to re-signing Jeter, Mariano, Girardi, Pettite (?), while putting our name into the Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford sweepstakes.

The drive for 28 will continue next year.

I don't really think the Yanks have much choice but to re-sign Jeter though as I've posted elsewhere, I think he is on an inexorable downward slide. Mariano is a given, and Pettite if he is willing. Girardi I can leave or take. Lee is on my wish list and though initially I was neutral on Crawford, I think his energy would give a real boost to a team that in my view is close to being geriatric in many areas. Yeah they got to the ALCS but we spoiled Yankee fans expect more from a $200M plus payroll team and that won't change as I subscribe to my overpriced ticket plan for next season. Cashman checks these threads, doesn't he?

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Yanks should stay clear of Crawford. When you have Gardner for basically dirt cheap for two more years and had similar numbers to Crawford this year, you don't waste money on him. Crawford hits more homers, a little better average, and a slightly better arm. Gardner has a higher OBP, more range in the OF, and showed improvement this year.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Dave Eiland fired as Yanks pitching coach this morning.

Not a big surprise seeing the struggles of the staff, the bullpen, and Eiland's personal stuff that took him away from the team almost half a dozen times this year.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Looks like Girardi is going to get $9 to $10 million for 3 years.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Look for Posada to be DH. Montero and Cervelli will be the catchers. Gardner's OBP was pathetic in the ALCS.:( During the season he showed a big improvement over last year. I still like Crawford over Gardner. More pop in his bat. After watching Cliff Lee tonight he might not be worth signing.:D Just kidding.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Some thoughts...

I look for Posada to take a much less of a catching role, but I doubt that he will be the full time DH. I think the major factor in how much time Posada sees behind the plate is how ready Montero is next spring. I don't think Posada wants to be the full time DH and I doubt the Yanks want to keep three catchers on the roster, even if one is a DH.

More importantly is how long of a contract do they give Jeter and they **** well sure have a plan to transition him out of SS. But then where do you put him? None of the option are all that attractive.

It would be nice if they could sucker someone into taking AJ, but that isn't going to happen so whomever is the new pitching coach better be able to get him back to a decent pitcher. And be able to do something with Joba. I think he's mentally lost his edge and just needs to get his head back in shape.

I'd throw whatever money it takes to get Andy and Rivera back. I would like to have Wood back too (never thought I would write that!) but I think he moves on for more money.

Ok, I know nobody will agree with me on this, but I am thinking the Lee will be a waste of money. The long term contract and the money he is going to command will be way over priced for his talents. There is a reason he's played on so many teams and it's not all about the money. But since the Yanks desperately need another (at least) starting pitcher, I full expect to have them throw huge money at Lee.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

Yanks declined their club options on Lance Berkman, Kerry Woods and Nick Johnson. If Woods doesn't get a closer's job on a contender, Yanks may be able to bring him back at less money as the 8th inning guy. They didn't want to pay him the $11 million option to pitch the 8th inning. Goodbye Lance and Nick.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

pretty much moot considering the last post, but keep in mind that montero is not on the 40 man roster right now.. so someone would theoretically have to be moved first to make room for him.

There's a ton of guys coming off in the offseason due to free agency and the club declining options. The Yankees will put Montero on the 40 man but not until after the Rule 5 draft is over and certainly not until they know what Andy wants to do next year.

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

I figured I would reply in the offseason thread to this post...

Maybe the Yanks can get Rags to be the new pitching coach, he certainly did a pretty good job with the Giants.

Whomever the new pitching coach is he must have the ability to get AJ's and Joba's heads straightened out so that they can regain some of their abilities!

Re: New York Yankees Offseason: the long Crawl to the Cliff

NY Daily News is reporting that Jesus Montero will be given every opportunity to be the Yanks starting catcher next spring. Yanks want to bring Posada back as the DH/part time catcher. No surprise there as Jorge will turn 40 next season.

One of the beat writers wrote back in August how the Yankees wanted to call him up in September when the rosters expanded, but Montero had his leg infection so that killed the plan. People knock Montero's defensive game, but in the last two years he's made huge strides behind the plate. His home to second base time is right around Mauer's time now and he also has really limited the PBs. He's no Romine by any stretch of the imagination, but I can't imagine he's any worse than Posada right now.

Tex, Cano, and surprisingly, Jeter win Gold Gloves. I think Elvis Andrus from Texas should have won it at SS. And Gardner got robbed in LF. The guys over at RAB have that break down.

If the Yankees are going to have catchers that are crappy at playing defense no matter what (Posada and Cervelli were awful last year) then you might as well get Montero involved now since he will be mashing pitching. Why have a sh-tty no-stick catcher that can't catch when you can have a guy with potential Pujols/Miguel Cabrera-like batting skills that can't catch instead?

I agree 100%. If you want a good catcher that can hit, you'll be hard pressed to find one. Posada behind the plate looked like Matsui trying to play the outfield, he was there, but only to catch the ball thrown right at him. Montero's made huge progress behind the plate already and having him with Tony Pena all year can only improve his defense.

In other news, I'm interested to see what this Laird kid's got. He blew up Double-A and could be that right-handed bat ala Thames in a year or so.

Laird's got potential to be decent, but he's gotta show what he can do in AAA. He played about 30 games in Scranton and struggled so he'll need a little more time. He's 23 so he's got another year or two to get it right. As long as he stops getting into bar fights with his brother he'll be OK.
