Netgear question

Eagles

Seguin!
So sometime yesterday my Netgear router decided not to work. I am 100% positive its the Netgear box because I am currently using the ethernet cable from the Comcast modem into my laptop.

I've unplugged the Netgear box and rearranged the cords but the wireless internet light on the box will not light up. Is there anything else I can do or am I stuck buying a new Netgear box?

You'll probably have to go into the control panel, and if it has the same panel as mine it'll try and update itself, see if that helps.

To get to the control panel go into a web browser and enter in 192.168.1.1 as the address, and the default login information should be

PW : Password

And can you see the wireless source when you try and connect or is it off entirely?

Buy something other then NetGear. They are notorious for overheating, and once they do the wireless is permanently dead.

It doesn't work when I type in that address. I tried it with the Netgear plugged in, nothing plugged in, and just comcast plugged in.

I'm not sure what you mean as the wireless source. When I go to my start menu then "Connect to" it shows that I am connected to the network. The wireless internet light on the netgear box is not turned on.

Funny that you mention that because it did feel pretty warm. The box is only 2 years old...

What do you mean it doesn't work? You have a router not a switch right?

So it shows you are connected to the wireless, but you can't do anything? Mouseover the little connection icon in the system tray, what does it say after "Access:"? Local or internet?

If it says 'local' you might be having trouble with your dns.

I do have a router but when I copy and paste the address into my web browser it just says that the page cant be displayed.

My computer can connect to the box, its sending out a signal but its not sending wireless. So I can connect to my network but there is no internet on it. For whatever reason I dont have the connection icon in my tray. It seems to come and go as it pleases.

I just called Netgear but I have to pay for their help. I think I am gonna try their email service.

If I have to get a new wireless box what do you recommend?

http://192.168.1.1

Try pasting that, if your router has any kind of admin program, which it should, that url should bring you to it so long as you have a connection to the router.

And you're computer is connecting to the wireless if you can connect to the router, the problem is from the router to your modem to the internet. Which is probably a DNS issue. Try unplugging the power for both your router/modem and letting them sit for about 10 seconds, then plug in the modem, wait till the ready light stays on, then plug in the router.

Plug your Netgear into the cable modem and then plug your laptop into the Netgear. This way you should definately have Internet. If you don't, time to buy a new router. If you do have Internet try typing in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 as a web address. You should then get a screen that looks something like this:

Click on Wireless Settings and try to setup a wireless connection. I can't help much after this as I'm not at home and can't remember exactly what you need to do. This may be able to help though starting on page 15.
