NCHC Commish hits the road before first game

Re: NCHC Commish hits the road before first game

I'm sure the NCHC will have 3 or 4 most years with the potential for 2 or 5 depending on how NC goes.

But we have 16 teams make it with the following breakdown:

HEA (12): 3-6
B1G (6): 2-4
NCHC (8): 2-5
ECAC (12): 1-4
WCHA (10): 1-4
AHA (11): 1-2

It seems highly unlikely that any conference is going to get half their teams in going forward except the B1G just because there are only 6 teams and will likely have the most favorable schedules with more home games. The NCHC certainly has a chance at 4 or 5 but 3 seems to be a much more likely number. I think you have to assume that the WCHA, ECAC and AHA will combine for 5-6 teams most years which leave 10-11 spots for HEA, B1G and NCHC. Hockey east is going to have 4-5 most years so that cuts it down to 6-7 spots for B1G and NCHC.

Okay yeah I see how you're breaking it down. I think the new set up is going to exploit a problem in the pairwise, as records can be inflated against weaker competition. I know that's been happening in the ECAC and AHA, but I think it will be happening in the WCHA a lot more now as well. I could be wrong, but I think 6 teams between those three conferences is a bit high based on the level of talent there.

Yea the ECAC had a real tough time with the WCHA last year!

The ECAC has had at least 2 teams in the tournament the last 9 seasons and over the last 6 seasons they've average 2.5 teams. I have a feeling the WCHA will be more like 1.5-2 on average but depending on how things shake out, ultimately they could end up in the 2+ range if a few teams really rise to the top. If we continue with 2.5 teams for ECAC, 1.5 teams for WCHA and 1 for AHA thats 5 in an average year. Certainly could end up with 6 some years and 4 others but 5-6 seems quite likely to me, especially if the conference tournaments have some upsets.

Re: NCHC Commish hits the road before first game

I get that. I was actually attempting to support your contention. They are all getting the same deal. I think all of those teams actually are getting almost as good of a deal as a 1:1. The potential for larger crowds and thus a bigger gate are there. Whether that pans out or not, I don't know.

I don't think the WCHA will have that many more games with B10 teams at all. There just isn't the kind of financial advantage for most of the teams. The only B10 team that's a draw for MSU (and I would assume BSU) is Minnesota. I would think the same could be said for the Michigan teams in the WCHA. I just don't see that much of a financial advantage for many of those teams unless the B10 teams are going to really open up their checkbooks.

My guess is the wisconsin's of the world will pay a lot for people to play there and that is why some WCHA schools will do it.

I get that's the theory and I agree that some schools will do it. What I'm not sure about is how many teams in the WCHA will actually do that and how much the B10 school would have to pay. The point I was trying to make is that it's pretty limited on the schools the MSU (and I'm just using MSU as the example since it's the one I know best) would benefit from having come in on a 2-for-1. The only schools that really result in an uptick in attendance for MSU are MN and UND (and to a degree UMD and SCSU). Just for MSU to break even on that kind of a venture, WI would likely have to pay upwards of $160K (probably more) for MSU to lose a home weekend. On top of that, there are the PR issues that the school would then have to work though (just look at the beating that the school took from the Xcel/MN fiasco from a couple years ago). Maybe the financials at other WCHA schools are a bit different though. I honestly don't know.

I would assume the Xcel/MN fiasco would be received differently to a point since they are now non-conference games.

Yale beat a B1G school, a NCHC school. Quinnipiac beat an NCHC school.

Lone New WCHA representative was Minnesota State, who lost to an NCHC school.

Yale had a 4-0 record. I think three of their wins were in O.T. so we have to give them credit.
