NCAA D3 Rankings

The rankings should be released today.

I was thinking about it and I'm curious where Adrian will end up. Most of their losses are out of region, so don't count. Their in region record is 11-4-1 or 71.8%

Its an interesting discussion at least. Will they benefit from having all of those out of region games?

Say What? Unless there is a change, I believe the NC$$ ranks only by region with the regional rankings carrying over to the national for Secondary criteria purposes. Therefore only regional games would be included for the rankings. Doesn't make sense, but what does the NC$$ do that does??:)

Isn't that basically what I said??

My question was...does playing out of region games, benefit Adrian...especially when they lose them.

Re: NCAA D3 Rankings

Here they are

East Region Region Record Overall
1. Plattsburgh State 18-1-2 19-1-2
2. Amherst 16-2-4 17-2-4
3. Elmira 18-4-1 18-4-1
4. Trinity (Connecticut) 16-3-2 17-3-2
5. Middlebury 13-5-2 14-5-2
6. Rochester Institute of Technology 14-4-3 16-4-3
7. Manhattanville 13-5-1 16-6-1
8. Norwich 11-4-2 14-4-4
9. Salve Regina 10-5-2 12-8-3

West Region Region Record Overall
1. Lake Forest 13-1-4 15-2-4
2. Wisconsin-River Falls 14-3-6 14-3-6
3. Gustavus Adolphus 15-4-2 15-4-2
4. St. Catherine 14-4-1 14-4-1
5. Adrian 11-4-1 13-10-2
6. Wisconsin-Superior 13-8-2 13-8-2

Say What? Just seeing if you read my posts. It could affect 5 of the 8 Secondary criteria. Rules for out of region scheduling are:

1. If you schedule teams not in the mix for the FF, definitely DO NOT LOSE!
2. If you schedule teams in the mix for the FF, schedule them at home and definitely WIN! (ie. see Plattsburgh scheduling technique.:D )

Now in Adrian's case, they might do well (not) in region on the match-up's, but for an at-large bid under the Secondary criteria, they are hosed. Of the 14 teams at or above 500 in the east they have a 5-8-1 record in the Secondary criteria. That sir doesn't cut it. The NC$$ doesn't even have to go into a smoke filled room and drink single malt scotch to figure that out.

Re: NCAA D3 Rankings

The rankings are kind of interesting.

Amherst over Elmira isn't that shocking I guess. Amherst has a much worse loss and tie than Elmira does, so I figured Platty would be 1, Elmira 2.

It does look to me like its setting up for 3 western teams. Say what didn't put Trinity and St Kate into her(?) comparisons, so I'd be interested in seeing those comparisons(hint hint).

If Favorites win conference tourneys

Pool A
Plattsburgh
Amherst
Norwich
Lake Forest
St. Kate/Gustavus/St. Thomas

Pool C
Elmira
River Falls or Gustavus

Lake Forest doesn't have proper hosting facilities..so it would be at one of the other two I guess...would Lake Forest still get the bye in the west, and the FF be at the winner of the other QF(?)

Say What? See up date to Bracketology. Because of the rankings, Trinity is now in and Middlebury is out. As to your question concerning St Kate, I indicated they were tied for 5th place per criteria in the west. With the official rankings out they are in 5th all by themselves ahead of St Thomas. I had to split my post in two just to get everything I had in. It didn't need to be longer by adding St Kate who is not remotely in the at-large competition.

Three Western teams are certainly a possibility. But then the nominating committe hasn't gone to Bermuda yet to pick the teams. And I believe I saw that the members are still slightly stacked towards the eastern seaboard. Gee I wonder how this is going to work out in the end. Besides RF is the odd woman out if everything plays out as normal and LF win's the NCHA tournament.

I think if GAC wins the MIAC, River Falls has a chance. Trinity has a horrible SOS. It's so bad, it may trump their Win % advantage over River Falls. I think the NCAA could make a case for taking River Falls ahead of Trinity. I actually think they'd have a harder case against Middlebury (which may explain why the Eastern Committee has begun moving Middlebury up the ladder. Here is the comparison from USCHO.com:

Middlebury vs Wis.-River Falls
WIN 0.6739 0 0.7391 1
OWP 0.5778 1 0.5570 0
OOP 0.5162 1 0.5159 0
H2H 0- 0- 0 0 0- 0- 0 0
COP 0- 0- 0 0 0- 0- 0 0
RNK 2- 4- 3 0 3- 3- 3 1

The comparison is 2-2, but as above, Middlebury's win in the SOS criteria may trump a one game advantage in RNK and winning %....

well thats interesting. Gustavus jumps River Falls when both win...did GAC's SOS go up a little for playing SMU and River Falls go down for playing Marian??

Good question. After seeing both play River Falls is a much better team. My question is why is Adrian ranked so high?

In the case of Adrian...all of their games out east don't count in the west rankings. They only consider games against teams within your region. They are 11-4-1 within the region which ranks them high. If they were ever in for a comparison with another team and things were close, they would lose out if it went to secondary criteria, because them games count then.

Thanks, very interesting on how that works vs ranking..Now I'm really looking at schedules, haha

This is also kind of why we don't have as much interplay between the regions. It doesn't do any good as far as the rankings go. Teams in the east don't get credit for playing the west teams and vice versa. The way the NCHA/MIAC schedule was set up this year, Adrian had to play all of their non-conference games in the east...otherwise they probably wouldn't have had anyone to play.

It's not really that far fetched, in fact with the current numbers I agree with the NCAA. FWIW I also had GAC ahead of UWRF in my ballot this week.

Code:
    Gustavus Adolphus vs Wis.-River Falls
WIN 0.8000 1 0.7778 0
OWP 0.5309 0 0.5447 1
OOP 0.4950 0 0.5118 1
H2H 1- 0- 1 1 0- 1- 1 0
COP 9- 4- 1 0 9- 1- 1 1
RNK 3- 2- 1 1 3- 3- 3 0
============================================
PTS 3 3

GAC with a slim lead in Win%, and UWRF with a slim advantage in SOS.

GAC takes the H2H.

The Common Ops goes to UWRF and the RNK goes to GAC.

In this case it is likely the H2H was swung the comparison in GAC's favor, given that everything else was essentially a wash.

I don't think its that farfetched either and they probably should be. I just don't see why River Falls would be ranked ahead one week and then not lose and fall behind.
