"Mullet," or, stop doing anything else -- this is important

I need 2 things crowdsourced from you people, stat:

(1) Informally, the approximate date of the earliest mention of the term "mullet" in reference to hockey hair of which we are collectively aware
(2) Formally, the earliest evidence thereof, with an exact date.

My wife was listening to an episode of Decoder, and they maintain after much research that the earliest they could find is the song Mullet Head, by Beastie Boys, from 1994. Their story is Mike D. just coined the term from nothing. Even more cringe, the OED currently accepts this as their etymology.

This aggression will not stand, man! That is obviously bullshit. So help me get the receipts and together we will rewrite the OED and credit the USCHO Fan Forum.

I remember the term “hockey hair” being commonly used when I was a kid in the 80s, but I don’t know when “mullet” started up.

I could have swore I heard people talking about Scott Erickson’s mullet back in ‘91, but I also remember thinking it was the guy from Married… with Children. (Ted McGinley)

I was 8, so not what you’d call reliable testimony.

I recall people talking about mullets when I was in high school.

I was in high school in 1979.
