Please vote for your 4 choices to be on Maine's "Mount Rushmore." The poll will allow you to vote for more than 4 choices, but if you exceed 4 choices, your vote's weight will diminish by how many votes you cast (i.e. if you cast 5 votes, each vote will count as 80% (4/5) of its normal value). Also, there will be no concentration of a vote's weight (i.e. if you only vote for 1 your vote will count as 4 votes).

Further, if Maine is the program that you follow and you want your vote to count for more than say a BC fan's vote, please register your program allegiance here...

The voting will remain open for 35 days.

Also, feel free to post "bios" of candidates if you wish.

If you vote for "Other" please post the name of the person you wish to vote for.

Re: Mount Rushmore: Maine

Are we nominating names at this stage, or did I stumble on this at while you're still posting the poll info?

eta: never mind. I've got my answer.

Shout-outs to:

Jean-Yves Roy. Not a top-4 guy, but still one of my faves.
John Tortorella - before my time as a Maine fan, but not many Blackbears are on the Stanley Cup.

While I was posting the poll info :)

You are still able to vote for people not on the list. You just need to vote for "other" and then nominate the person within this thread.

I can't hear about John without thinking about his brother Jimmy. I loved watching that guy. Others from the dark ages:
Andre Aubut
Gary Conn

And I'd name the concession stand or whatever for Harold. He means a lot to people up here.

Re: Mount Rushmore: Maine

A few stats for the guys who earned my vote:

Scott Pellerin: 106-117-223 in 167 career games for 1.34 ppg. 2-time Tri-Captain of the Black Bears and the team's first Hobey-Baker winner. First team All-American in 1991-92. His #8 was the first to be retired by the school*.
Jim Montgomery: 103-198-301 in 170 games for a 1.77 ppg. Captained the 42-1-2 national championship team, scoring a natural hat trick to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 victory. Twice a second team All-America (1991, 1993). His #19 has been retired by the university.
Garth Snow: 66-10-3 (.854) with a 2.55 GAA in 84 games from 1988-1993. Went 21-0-1 (.977) in the championship season of 1992-93. 20 years later, his 66 wins and 10 career assists remain tops among goaltenders at Maine. He was a legitimate 3rd defenseman on the ice (as anyone who saw the third period against Lake State knows all too well) unlike his successors in the position.

PK was a very good friend and the best college hockey player I've ever seen, but I did not put him on my Mt. Rushmore because he only played a season and a half, whereas the others played a full four years.

* - In the summer of 1992 I was issued a spare sweatsuit from the equipment room. It happened to be Scott Pellerin's #8. I racked up quite a collection of fines from the Kangaroo Court before I finally got the OK from Scott to wear it even though the number was officially retired.

Re: Mount Rushmore: Maine

I struggled with PK. I really did. It doesn't seem fair at all to put him on the Mt, and not Monty. I'm legitimately torn.

If this is Maine-specific, you have to give the nod to Montgomery. I guess I was thinking of Kariya's notoriety, the attention that he brought to Maine, and the fact that he seemed to be a pretty good ambassador for the program. Still, I dunno...

Re: Mount Rushmore: Maine

How does Montgomery have just 8 votes at this juncture????

Agree with Jean-Yves at least being added but he would not be in my top 4 and Gary Conn and Andre Aubut deserve consideration. Had to go with PK and I go with Jimmy over Garth. Hell I would actually go with Alfie over Garth. Garth and Mike Dunham shared duties were great tenders but saw no shots compared to what Jimmy did in his 3 years and what Alfie did to bring home a title.

In the end it was Montgomery, Pellerin, Kariya and Howard for me for 4 players. THink I am the 1st to not vote for Coach Walsh, but was thinking players. Shawn deserves something bigger than Rushmore for what he did for the program.
