Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) adding a program?

Some time ago I saw they had plans to add a club team this fall.

The website hasn’t been updated with anything to indicate it actually started. While I was doing some more searching I then saw a job opening posted 10/20/21 for a full time head women’s hockey coach.

I doubt that’s related to a club. It looks like it would be for a NCAA team. Did ideas for a club become a bit more grandiose? I couldn’t find any announcements they’re starting a program though. Am I missing something?

(wholly unrelated to hockey, but I lived on the 'east side' of Milwaukee for a little over a year, late 1981 through early 1983. And I used to listen to the MSOE student radio station; VERY limited broadcast range (And well before internet streaming, etc,). I'm not sure how well you could even get it past maybe "highway 100" on the west side. Completely programmed by the students themselves, with an 'anything goes' policy, and a wide wide variety to the music they played. Really good stuff. So good in fact that, even with their limited range, they showed up in an Arbitron ratings book one quarter. And that apparently brought the station to the attention of the school's board of regents, who must have been generally unaware that they even had a radio station. Well, the board got a taste of what was being played, and that was quickly the end of the "anything goes" programming. Overnight, it got much less "interesting". They had become too successful and popular for their own good. I don't know about these days, but back then MSOE was an odd thing.)

Another great story. Thanks for sharing.

We must be of the same era as I also remember a time when the college radio stations, which usually had a broadcast range of only a few miles, had by far the most interesting programming. I wondered how they got away with what they did and heard a rumor that the FCC rules did not apply. I did some looking at even though officially the rules applied, but were very rarely enforced. Interesting article: https://www.higheredcompliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/CollegeRadio.pdf

I’m a little late on the follow up. It’s confirmed they are starting an NCAA team. More Midwest hockey is always good. Original sources below, also USCHO had an article for those paying attention. Do they join the NCHA or the WIAC?

Thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Kathleen Ruehlow '72, MSOE Regent, MSOE is able to begin phase one of a multi-year plan to expand co-curricular offerings that include an expansion of arts programming and women's sports.

In phase one, new offices for coaches and new women's locker rooms are being built in the Kern Center and Viets Field. This allows the Raiders athletics program to add five new women's teams to its roster: lacrosse, hockey, swim, golf, bowling, and to expand women's track and field offerings.

Davis comes to MSOE from his most recent stop of Rochester Institute of Technology. He coached two seasons at NCAA D-I RIT and was named CHA Coach of the Year after turning around the Tiger's women's team. Before that, Davis put together an incredible resume at Adrian College.

The assumption is they apply to the NCHA which will help make up the loss of CSS to the MIAC. If MSOE puts the same resources behind Davis that Adrian did they could be impressive out of the gate like an Endicott or Nazareth.

I'll have a story on this soon. They've been a bit slow to respond and there's shockingly little information about it out there. I found out about it when they hired Davis.
MSOE has great facilities, has put a bunch of money in athletics in recent years and has had a very good men's program. I have high hopes for this expansion.
