MICHIGAN TECH IS AT THE SIOUX DAMMIT - February 17-18

Re: MICHIGAN TECH IS AT THE SIOUX DAMMIT - February 17-18

The Whioux?

No, not the Whioux, the Sioux, er wait now they're North Dakota... oh wait this just in they're the Sioux again... oh shoot just missed it, now they're North Dakota again... Whoops appeals court says they are allowed to be the Sioux again.... blast, Political Bear Stands with a Suit says they are North Dakota again... Just pick a name DAMMIT!

Regardless of what you call them, I will be there Friday to see the circus that is the UND "Whoix-overs" vs the Huskies in the Ralph as the Huskies pass the green team for home ice advantage this weekend.

A tornado name Mel and his team are heading to Grand Forks ready to wreck anything in their path...
Go Tech!

Re: MICHIGAN TECH IS AT THE SIOUX DAMMIT - February 17-18

Is that the Soo Line?

Here is the whole back story if you are interested...
"This occurred 7Jan2008 on the Union Pacific railroad near Harvard IL. You can see the trees being whipped, hear debris hitting the trailing engine from which the video came, and then see debris flying through the air from the F3 tornado that blows some cars over. Then the rest of the train carried along by its' momentum smashes its' way along creating even more of a mess. The tank car seen in the vid, containing shock fluid, leaked for hours before it was contained.

The tornado started at 3:30 pm about 1.2 miles north of Poplar Grove in Boone county and ended at 3:48 pm about 3.2 miles north northeast of Harvard in McHenry county, Illinois.
The first signs of damage were at Quail Trap road where trees were damaged and sections of roofing were removed from a shed. A large barn was destroyed and other buildings were severely damaged. Large trees were snapped or uprooted. The tornado reached its maximum intensity of EF3 at the northeast corner of Centerville road and Beaverton road. A two story farm house and garage were leveled and large trees were stripped of all branches. The tornado was about 100 yards wide through this area.

There was damage to trees, power lines, barns, and sheds. The tornado then crossed the Boone/McHenry county line as a weak EF0 tornado with just minor tree damage at this point. It crossed Hunter road and continued to track northeast across Ryan road as an EF0 and caused mainly minor tree damage. It crossed White Oaks road then it uprooted a hardwood tree and snapped off pine trees at their base along Maxon road. The tornado intensified as it moved toward the town of Lawrence where it produced the worst damage. Significant damage occurred in the town of Lawrence particularly at a house that had more than half of its roof ripped off and garage blown out.

The tornado then moved across the Chicago and Northwestern railroad where it blew 12 railroad freight cars off the track. The train was moving at the time the tornado hit it...so as the main engine stopped...the remaining cars on the track continued along it and slammed into the front part of the train. This caused a few more cars to derail...including one containing hazardous materials that caused the evacuation of the town of Lawrence.

As the tornado moved east of Lawrence it once again started to weaken with some tree damage and shingles off of a few houses on the northeast side of town. It then ran along Oak Grove road for a stretch where it produced EF1 damage with a hardwood tree snapped at its base and knocked over an old...weakly structured barn with estimated winds around 100 mph. It then headed across farm fields and headed for hwy 14 where it damaged a metal barn and sheared a few trees. As it crossed highway 14 it flipped a semi-trailer and injured the driver at a truck stop weigh station."

Actually it is pre-Christmas Sue of any given year. They always fall of the tracks in the first half of the year. Unfortunately, they seem to get it back on track the second half and get rolling.

Re: MICHIGAN TECH IS AT THE SIOUX DAMMIT - February 17-18

This should be a good series. Michigan Tech is a much improved squad, that mentally will not lay down. North Dakota is extremely shorthanded, but has played well lately. Either way, here is my take...

Offense: Edge Michigan Tech. The Sioux have struggled offensively throughout much of the season, and that is shown in their 2.86 goals/game in conference play. Tech has been able to solve opposing goalies a bit better, putting in 3.41 goals/game in conference. That being said, North Dakota has been getting a bit more contribution from their other lines, and if the top line can put in a couple goals, the Sioux might be able to take over the edge here. For now though, I'll lean towards Tech offensively.

Defense: Edge North Dakota. The Sioux have been playing better defensively over the past few months, and with the return of Derek Forbort the numbers should keep improving. Tech has played respectable defense this season, allowing 3.09 goals/game in WCHA play, but North Dakota has the better blueliners, and should be able to dictate play in their own end.

Goaltending: Draw. Nobody on either side of the ice has lit the world on fire this year. While Dell and Eidsness each have great pedigrees, they have both been disappointing at times as well. Josh Robinson has played well for the Huskies, but has struggled lately.

Special Teams: Draw. North Dakota is slightly better on the powerplay, while Tech has the slight advantage on the penalty kill. Their net special teams are nearly identical (+2 for North Dakota, +3 for Tech), so neither team has a significant advantage here.

Coaching: Slight Edge North Dakota. While Mel Pearson has done a tremendous job, and is potentially the coach of the year in the WCHA, Hakstol has been equally impressive, taking a group of walk-ons and defensemen to round out his forward unit due to injuries and early departures. What gives Hakstol the slight edge is his experience, and his amazing record in February and March. For whatever reason, Hakstol is able to prepare his squad to play excellent hockey in those months, better than any other coach in the country.

Overall: Edge North Dakota. North Dakota has home ice, and a team that is surging. If the series is played 5x5, North Dakota should take four points. That being said, Michigan Tech has more proven scorers this season, and has more depth across their four forward lines. If the Sioux have struggles in net, or take too many penalties, Michigan Tech will make them pay.

So if the UND whatever's do not get home ice and are out of the final five, will they turn down the money from the wcha?
