Massachusetts 2024 off season : The Flagship in Dry Dock

A couple of surprise names enter the portal. Most notable so far is Taylor Makar.

Defenseman Sebastian Tornqvist is another. The defensive corps are getting wiped out. Assuming Scott Morrow goes pro only Owen Murray remains. Sounded like a great opportunity for Tornqvist to get more ice time.

Linden Alger got his 4 years, Carvel doesn’t let anyone do a fifth year. He’ll be a nice pickup for someone.

Junior Eric Dobblear only suited up for 2 games in 3 seasons, so not a big surprise he would look elsewhere.

Not sure who will show up next fall. My guess is that Carvy goes into the portal for a bunch of 1 year players. I don't think Makar got along with the coach-who knows?

Makar had an odd, unsatisfying career. He started the season on the first line and finished on the first line. In between he was moved around a lot. He completely disappeared during February. He’s big, can skate, but has absolutely no offensive skills. Maine looked really small on the ice, so he’ll provide something they need. He will be easily replaced in Amherst.

Carvel’s biggest task is replacing the entire defensive corps, save for Owen Murray. It’s a little worrisome, I’m expecting a less competitive team next year. Hope I’m wrong.

Captain Aaron Bohlinger to Quinnipiac. I confused him with Linden Alger in an earlier post. Looks like Alger is going to take his degree and move on to real life. The best to both 4 year players.

Looks like we (UVM) picked up Sebastian Tornqvist in the portal. Looks like he only played half the games....was he just stuck behind too much talent, or was he bad, or was he hurt, or was it some combination of all of those?

Sebastian had potential. He was a freshman with two guys with NHL potential, two grad transfers, and two seniors ahead of him on the depth chart. I was sad to see him go elsewhere. You might have a keeper, too soon to tell, but definitely worth finding out. Plus his brother is already on your roster. That’s a thing now thanks to the Boston schools. UMass is doing it too, we have another Musa on next years roster.

The Minutemen pick up their first, and almost certainly not the last, player from the portal. Lucas Olvestad, who appears to be a 3rd pairing D from Denver. He still has 2 years left, so we’ll call it a very good start. At this stage, he’s going to be a first line guy.

The Minutemen roster is starting to shape up. Per Chip Ainsworth of the Greenfield Recorder (the best local coverage since Masslive lost Matt V):

5 committed defensemen including

6’3” Larry Keenan, a 4th round pick of the Ted Wings;

Charlie Lieberman, a 6’5”. Lots of size between them .

Kazimier Sobieski, who sounds like a European but actually grew up in Deerfield and Finn Loftus a Minnesota native round out the 4 freshmen expected to contribute right away.

A 5th defenseman is Francesco Dell’Elce who needs to bulk up.

In addition to Jack Musa’s brother, a Slovakian, Daniel Jencko beefs up one of the forward lines.
