Thanks for the NZ numbers update. Just curious would you be able to figure out what Maverick Mckinnon's NZ rating is if he has one. (Younger brother of Malachi)

He is a 4.5

He is only 15 right now, but got good press at the USA hockey select U15 festival…

Maverick Mckinnon #18 (F, R, 5’8″, 159, Forest Lake HS, 09/14/2010) – McKinnon came to camp as one of the most decorated 2010-born prospects in the country and backed it up scoring 5 goals in 4 games and taking over games in spurts. He has experience playing against older and fast competition at the high school level where he avergaged two points per game as a freshman at Forest Lake HS. He was always around the puck and a genuine scoring threat when he was on the ice. Two of the goals he scored were highlight reel plays; one against Team Gold where he came off the wall and sniped it shortside high over the shoulder and against Team Red he had a quick, smooth release wrister from the faceoff dot that went top corner over the goalies shoulder. While his shot is both powerful and accurate – his best attribute in scoring goals was actually his puck control – he has great poise and handling – never has to look down at the puck so he can read the goalie and react to their movements and when he saw net the puck was off his stick. McKinnon was the best puck possession forward in the tournament – he dashes and cuts through traffic, he changes direction instantly, can stickhandle his way out of jams and has great balance to absorb contact and maintain his stride. Maverick has complete control when he’s on the ice, he dictates the pace – he can slow it down or speed it up – he can get stickhandle through traffic and beat defends 1v1 consistantly and has a rare blend of balance and finesse. The Minneosta standout wasn’t just an offensive threat – he had a hard backcheck against Team Red that saved a goal breaking up a centering pass. It was an effort play and also a heady play to make the read to find the open guy coming down the slot instead of chasing after the puck carrier. The knock on Maverick would be his upside – he’s already strong, has a stocky build and doesn’t have explosive skating ability. His strides are bit short and takes away from maintaning a top level speed and that won’t show up here and maybe not at the high school level but when he gets to junior and beyond he’ll need to continue to develop his stride mechanics and flat line speed at his size. Grade: A

One thing we need to brace ourselves for is that kids that are from Minnesota that have verbal committed to Maine have flipped when other big hockey schools in Minnesota/Wisconsin have come calling. The Meyer kid comes to mind. Recently Wooten and Montgomery have done this. I really hope the McKinnons get to Maine, but I have stopped counting on the highly touted kids from Minnesota actually making it here.

Did any 15 yr old who "committed" ever come to Maine? Tim never had one, I don't believe Red did either

Who's the last reasonably touted MN kid to come to Maine? Robby Dee is about all I can think of.
Reasonably touted would be Killian Kiecker-Olson, he was a NZ 3.75. He lasted 1 season and then transferred to Canisius.

In general not many from Minnesota in last 10 to 15 years. Was hoping this could change with Coach Barr because he is from Minnesota and played for Shattuck. But doesn’t seem to be an area where he is focusing on.

To commit at 15 you have to commit without the coach being able to contact you.

I can only think of 1 that even did that, which was Oliver Wahlstrom, and he pulled his commitment and went to BC instead.

How many have there ever been at all? I can only recall Wahlstrom.

I mean, if there has only been one 15 year old to commit then this seems like a silly thing to treat as a trend.

It is more about the recruits that get recruited, commit, then change their commitment the spring before they are set to come to Maine. That has happened numerous times and has nothing to do with 15 year old commitment when Coaches can’t even recruit them yet.

Tim had several, I can't remember their names, couple from Detroit area that went Major Jr, I believe more from Maritimes and maybe Quebec. The theory was they used the commitment to Maine to get more money/bennies from the Major Jr teams

One of them was supposedly Sydney Crosby. But that doesn’t seem to really count because that was back in the day when Canadian kids had to choose between major junior vs. NCAA. Crosby had 0.0001% chance of playing college hockey probably.

I’m talking about kids that are after 16 and were recruited and would verbal, wait two years and in the spring before they are set to come to Maine pull out leaving Maine to scramble to find someone as good as they could find but wasn’t usually as highly rated. Ben Meyers did that. Andrew Kuzma did that recently. Blake Montgomery did that recently. Zach Wooten did that recently.

It is annoying because you feel like Maine could have focused on a different recruit that wouldn’t leave Maine high and dry.

I think the QMJHL will help in this regard because if they focus there they should be able to benefit from the geographical edge and not the other way around. This way it makes it easier for their friends and family to see them. Which goes against us when it comes to having kids from Minnesota area come here,

I don't even recall that name. That's how uninspiring those teams were.

I thought Ben Meyers was asked to wait another year, and that's what made him jump ship. Though, he did go from Maine to Omaha, and then shortly after from Omaha to the Gophers, so maybe he really did have no intention of coming to Orono at all.

I remember him, though I'm not sure if Id go so far as to call him "highly touted".

Amkirby10, go read what Jacob wrote. He said “reasonably touted”. As such I offered up a 3.75 NZ from USHL as “reasonably touted” category. You have introduced “highly touted”. And you introduced it using quotes which isn’t what Jacob even said.

We wanted him to come in during the fall of 2018, and that didn’t happen. He played throughout the winter and started heating up and in January(I think) he pulled his commitment with Maine and committed to Nebraska-Omaha. Then he really started heating up and closed out the season on a tear. Next thing you know he committed to Minnesota. The point is that he ultimately chose home state team and a lot from that area like to stay in that area due to close proximity of family. Not to mention in his case he gets to play for the Gophers who are the most popular program in the state.
