For the CCHA, it seems like it is the No. 4 seed (or similar underachieving seed) in the CCHA Tournament who fails to make it to "The Joe" and then goes on to advance to the National Final. Examples include ...

UM 1998
MSU 2007
Notre Dame 2008
Miami 2009

That would make it Alaska this year, but Michigan is in a new category as a No. 7 Seed to win the CCHA Tournament Championship. Go Blue!

Didn't Minnesota do that in '06 as well?? That would make 4 out of 5. That's really shocking, and quite the impressive run. Have to go all the way back to 2005 since a McNaughton winner has made the Frozen 4.
