Joy to the world, the Lord has come! 2010 Christmas

Timothy A

Let's go RED!
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Luke, Chapter 2, 1-7

Have a Blessed and Joyous Christmas. :)

Happy Birthday to my buddy, Christ! And a merry Christmas to each and every one of you. May you feel the warmth of your families and friends, and know the awesomeness of what really counts.

But was it in 4BCE or 6CE?
Herod died in 4BCE (the events surrounding him would have been years before) but this census was in 6CE and different gospels point to both.

Leave it to Foxton to try and turn a perfectly reasonable thread into a religious debate.

A Merry Christmas to all, whether it has any religious significance to you, or if it's mostly just an end-of-the-year family affair (*raises hand*), or if it's just another reason to feign offense and argue semantics.

Must we argue about this every year?

Instead, debate whether a child should have a bb gun or if he'll shoot his eye out!

Don't be a poophead.

Merry Christmas everyone! Here's hoping it brings you joy!

Merry Christmass and substitutes!

May we as a world better listen to what Jesus had/has to say every year.

SCROOGE: Why should we? Christmas has two s's in it, and they're both dollar signs.
CRATCHET: Yeah, but they weren't there to begin with.
SCROOGE: Eh?
CRATCHET: The people keep hoping you'll remember. But you never do.
SCROOGE: Remember what?

CRATCHET: Whose birthday we're celebrating.
SCROOGE: Well, ....... don't get me wrong. The story of Christmas, in its simplicity, is a good thing - I'll buy that. It's just that we know a good thing when we see it.
CRATCHET: But don't you realize Christmas has a significance, a meaning.
SCROOGE: A sales curve! Wake up, Cratchet, it's later than you think.
CRATCHET: I know, Mr. Scrooge, I know.

Merry belated Christmas. My fiance did the coolest thing for me ever. She crocheted me a Doctor Who scarf. It's really close to original. She's so sweet to me.

Merry Christmas to the rest of you.

When the census was decreed and when it was carried out were not the same date. Due to a refusal for political reasons to carry out the census when it was decreed it took several years before the Romans made a final drop dead order to carry it out. This would explain why there would be such urgency for Joseph to take his nine month pregnant wife on a long journey to Bethlehem to register for this census. Luke's efforts as a historian have always proven to be 100% correct so why anyone would not just do a little historical research on this issue and take him at face value is beyond me.

That being said, may God bless all of my USCHO family. I pray that you would know His joy and peace this Christmas and in 2011.

Joy to the World, the Lord is come!!

Without unearthing some new record, the earliest census was taken 6CE, and Herod died in 4BCE. Luke puts the birth of Jesus pointing to a census. While Matthew points to Herod. Which one is correct? Nevermind all the "little" things that could be quibbled about between the gospels and how they don't always match up on events. Like geneology.

Luke's efforts as a historian have always proven to be 100% correct so why anyone would not just do a little historical research on this issue and take him at face value is beyond me.
That is the worst way to look at a historian that I have ever heard. This is compounded by the fact that none of the gospels have an author and the names were assigned to them years later by a committe.

I was going to let this one go, but since the thread's already been derailed...

That's the joke. Numerous members of the evangelical right believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible, so it's only fun to ask them about areas where a literal interpretation leads to a logical inconsistency.

That said, hope everyone had a merry Christmas, happy Festivus, wonderful Chanukuh (however you spell it), and so forth.

(also, the change from BC and AD to BCE and CE is an unnecessary bit of political correctness. I'm more offended by September-December being out of place on the calendar thanks to the switch in New Year's Day than I am by A.D.)

Hope you all had a merry Christmas and will have a happy New Year. Even Foxton and unofan!

Had a great time with the missus, including a round of frisbee golf Christmas morning.
