Re: Jamaica eyes Winter Olympics in ice hockey
They'll be a world champion US cricket team before Jamaica qualifies for Olympic ice hockey.
Well, look at it this way.
There are 204 member International Olympic Committee member countries. And there are 215 FIBA members for hoops. Of those 12 qualify for the Olympics in men's basketball, arguably one of the more popular sports. There are 24 teams at this year's FIBA world cup.
In hockey, there are 73 members of the IIHF but only 53 are full members. Associate members include such countries as Chile, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Liechtenstein.
In Sochi, there was 12 teams in the Olympic tourney. There are 16 teams qualified for next year's IIHF world championships.
A Jamaican hockey team faces much better odds of qualifying for the world championships in hockey (16 of 53 - 30%) than basketball (24 of 215 - 11%).
Given the international rules that, IIRC, if your grandparents are from a country, you can represent it, that helps. Although having an indoor rink would probably help...
And, in case you were wondering, the International Cricket Council has 109 members. The USA is only an associate member. As such it is NOT one of the ten teams competing for the test cricket title. I'd put the US's odds of winning that quite low... At least if Jamaica enters the hockey tourney it has a chance.
