Club hockey can be very competitive, especially at the D1 Club level. Many larger universities that don't have an NCAA team will have club hockey (i.e. Arizona State, Rutgers, Delaware). The better club teams will recruit the Junior leagues and Prep schools, getting those players that were possibly D3 caliber players who didn't want to go to a smaller school.

Check rosters of ACHA D1 teams. Many pull from tier 3 juniors. Some top teams even pull NAHL teams. Support and quality can vary widely depending on the teams.
