Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

I am confused as it seems some of these girls are not actually under 22 at all...

What am I missing?

I read earlier on the Hockey Canada site that Annie Guay had been added to the U-22 team as an overage player and made the team's captain. Maybe it is a progression of Sweden and Finland being allowed to use overage players to better compete with the Canadians. With the talent pool available to Canada, that they have to bring back 24-year-old players seems kind of silly. Why have a a U-22 competition if not to provide YOUNG players with the chance to play?

Agree completely. This is flat out wrong. If these players were good enough, they would be with the NWT instead of some younger players that are there instead. Either send the younger players back down to U22 for now if they are not ready to make the jump, or cut these overager bubble players completely. But either way make a clear decision. Maybe that's why none of these coaches were successful in college.

A venue for them to play at the highest level. There are roughly 6-5 U22 players on the NWT Olympic Camp. They are this year not available for the U22 events as their focus/commitment is on the Olympics. In other years there is no conflict between the NWT events and the U22 events. So this year there are 3-4 22-24 year olds on the team. I do not see this as a big deal.

Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

If countries don't have the talent pool to field a real U22 team that they are confident in during an olympic year then maybe they shouldn't have a U22 competition during said olympic years.

Either that or we shouldn't call it a U22 competition. It's kind of like saying that the college teams could go out and re-recruit kids who had already played out their NCAA eligibility and bring them back for another go because they didn't get the grade 12 kids that they wanted.

Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

Exactly; "them" being players who are, in fact, "under 22". And in Canada, there are a many, many female players who meet that definition. I agree that it isn't that big of a deal, but the people who are being hurt by this decision are those who would have made the roster had the older players not been given spots. The older players have already had the chance to play at this level.

Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

Kelly Paton comes to mind.

Note that her teammate Wakefield was quietly added as the other player to be added. She is now listed on the roster, but no new announcement on the HC site since the original squad was annnounced on Dec 8. They could obviously not announce this on Dec 8, as she was at that time still in the mix for the National Squad.

Overall three of the cuts from the NWT squad ended up on this U22 team. Jenner, Larocque and Wakefield.

Good catch on the other change. Any clue on the reason for the swap on D ?.

Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

According to this article, she was invited to camp but declined because she would rather play in the Fenway game vs Northeastern.

I recall a few years ago another player did a similar thing. She declined an invite one year and then a year later never got another invite even though she was a top scoring player. It triggered a pretty heavy discussion on the Ontario forum.

Re: Hockey Canada U22 Roster

Miss Birchard declined the invite, wishing to participate in the game at Fenway with her team.

Reading between the lines in the article it would seem that as a senior, it implied this was the end of her hockey career.
Also the article says that the MLP Cup is an U22 championship.
There have been few European teams that have sent U22 teams in the past as the Air Canada Cup.
Hence, this she why she was selected to attend the U22 selection camp in Calgary, but the team going to the MLP Nations Cup is made up some players from this group as well as other overage players. Most of the other teams are the Olympic rosters participating in this tournament.
Canada defeated Germany 6 - 1 in the exhibition game prior to the tournament.
At the moment it is 3 to 1 for Canada over Switzerland in the opening game in the second period.

I'm pretty sure Miss Birchard is not a Senior. She came out of the same IAA class as one of my D and this means she is at most a Junior. Secondly the article was about Miss Paton, not Miss Birchard.

I stand corrected on misreading the change in paragraphs and which player was being referred to in the next paragraph.
Birchard is indeed a junior.
Therefore who put the pressure on her, Birchard to hamper her National team aspirations? Did Birchard have the same burning desire to play at Fenway Park?
Or, did McCloskey not know that Schelling was going to be at the MLP cup?

Courtney is a Junior.

There was no pressure applied either by Hockey Canada or the UNH coaching staff. The Fenway Game is a huge event, and one she wanted to be a part of. She went through the proper channels and got approval to stay with UNH and play at Fenway.

Whether Coach McCloskey knew if the Swiss players were going to be there or not is irrelevant. Given that the Swiss National Team seems to be using this tourney as a tune up for Vancouver, it can't have been hard to figure out, but since UNH already has a W against NU's full squad, I would say they are prepared for whoever is in net. JMarty not being on the blue line may be a bigger hole to fill.
