White 3 - Red 2
WHITE EARNS INTERSQUAD REDEMTION IN SHOOTOUT
Rockland, Ont. – Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team selection camp rookie Emily Clark (Saskatoon, Ont.) looked calm, cool and collected as she skated down the ice during a shootout, with all eyes from the benches and stands on her, and sent a low bullet flying through the five-hole and into the mesh to boost White to a 3-2 win in intersquad action Friday night.
Erika Sowchuk (Vauxhall, Alta.) opened the scoring for White in the shootout, while Meghan Dufualt (Winnipeg, Man.) had Red's only shootout marker, in what was an evenly played, well-matched game on the ice inside the newly built Canadian International Hockey Academy arena. The White win evens the selection camp intersquad score, as Red edged White 1-0 in the first of three games Wednesday.
It was Red to crack the scoreboard first, when Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ont.) let a slap shot go from the point to make it 1-0 over White midway through the first. White struggled to put the puck in the net throughout the period, and was forced to dig out of an even bigger hole early in the second, when Meghan Dufualt (Winnipeg, Man.) made it 2-0 for Red just 13 seconds into the period.
But the second half of the game belonged to White, with Hanna Bunton (Belleville, Ont.) turning the momentum around in favour of her team as she skated into the slot, cut in close to the net, and put the puck over the goal line less than three minutes later.
Both teams fought hard throughout the third, Red to keep its one-goal lead and White to tie it up, but it was Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont.) who came through for her team at 11:53 in the period, when she took a shot from the left side of the net, sending the puck soaring high into the Red mesh, and the game into overtime.
The fast-paced action continued through five minutes of four-on-four OT, with neither team able to break the 2-2 tie before the buzzer sounded on the extra frame. Fans in the stands were given quite the treat, as they watched the most talented under-18 female players from across the country duke it out in a shootout, until the game was finally decided by Clark's stellar game-winner.
The third and final Red-White intersquad game takes place Saturday, August 13 at 4 p.m. ET, again at the Canadian International Hockey Academy in Rockland. Stop by and check out the action if you're in the Ottawa area, follow period-by-period updates at
