Hockey as you have never seen it....

Re: Hockey as you have never seen it....

The thing that jumps out at me is how different (and jarringly disconnected) the game looks from the players eyes than it does from our seats or television. It's amazing how they can see and execute what they see and do at speed, while being hit constantly by opponents. Anyone who's played the game knows the feeling, but these guys are operating at such a different level of speed and contact than beer league hockey....

The game slows down for some of us -- especially those of us playing for the "Wheezers" and "Geezers"! :D

Seriously, you're absolutely right that the speed is the difference. That's usually what a top draft pick or college player says after he plays his first NHL game.

Re: Hockey as you have never seen it....

one thing to remember is that our eyes stabalize images otherwise we would all be seeing much like this everyday and it would get very jarring. Its the same logic that if you look at your eyes in the mirror, you can't see them move when you look away.

That said, its interesting to see how the game looks from the ice. For my level of play its all much slower, but this gives you more of an appreciation for the talent level

Certainly the talent level enables the execution, but baked into talent is also the instinct and decision-making aspects. I guess when you practice and play as much as these guys do, seeing the opportunities and having enough talent to make something out of them at full speed is what makes them NHLers.

It would be interesting to see this camera angle in games. Now I would hope it wouldnt be used to much but maybe on a great save or something it would be cool to see what the goaltender sees. Or maybe the perspective of someone who just scored a goal.

Now all we need is a way to control the player's movements.

Re: Hockey as you have never seen it....

Aside from the obvious fact that the shot angles are awesome...what really is fascinating about this is how little time and space there is to work in. Just not a lot of room much of anywhere, and the fact they are able to do what they do in such tight spots merely emphasizes how skilled these guys are.

I remember back when the Penguins were at the bottom of the NHL barrel we watched them practice at the Southpointe Iceoplex. Even for the worst team of the day, the speed, flow and puck movement during the drills were impressive.

Re: Hockey as you have never seen it....

My outdoor league game felt a bit like that last night. When it gets this cold, my glasses fog over so much and so quickly that I can't really see at all so I end up playing without them. That means I can't really see the puck until it's within 30 feet, give or take, and so everything happens much faster than normal for me. When playing indoors my glasses will fog over while on the bench, but then they clear up within 15 seconds of being on the ice. Then it's nothing comparable to what you saw in that video, it's just purely my lack of talent shining through then.
