Highest Paid Coaches

Wondered about who the highest paid coaches are after seeing the budgets of all teams on Twitter this past week. What better way to get the data then to post a thread and divvy up the work! Obviously the public schools are a lot easier. If you have a private school number, please state the year in which it was from (usually 2 years behind)

I made a spreadsheet of coaches salaries when BC was looking to see what the market was like then, things will have obviously changed since but at the time of available salaries I could find, Nate Leaman was the highest paid coach at over $1mil on his new deal. I’ll see if I can dig it back up

WOW!! I missed Leaman. Good for him!

Definitely post if you can find it. Have been trying to look up salaries and some are hard to find!

Looks like I overshot it but I remembered seeing $1mil somewhere, may have been something with a bonus could take him over $1mil. $800k is still really high. The below is a really good website to do some digging. All colleges and universities who are non-profit which is 99% of them, have to report their highest paid employees in their taxes so most hockey coaches fall in the highest paid employee category so they’ll all be publicly available, just a matter of finding them. I remember finding about 60% of them. When I get back to my computer in the morning, I’ll see if I can find it

you might have been right originally. This report is several years old. During Cooley’s recent move to Georgetown it was reported he made 3.8 million this year. Last name mentioned as President is Brian Shanley. He finished his term as President after the 2019-20 school year

Coach Powers at ASU has a salary of $286,000 per year. I don't know what his bonus structure is.
The highest paid coach supposedly is Cavanaugh at UConn, he signed a five-year extension worth $1.9 million in addition to bonuses in May 2021. The coach is now under contract for two extra seasons — through the 2027-28 campaign — and will be paid roughly $240,000 more per year — from $360,000 to $597,000. For comparison, UMass head coach Greg Carvel — who won a national championship in 2021 and has three Hockey East titles under his belt — makes around $500,000 per year, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

Some of these may be outdated but I created this last year and updated with a few recent ones. If you have any updates or additions to these with sources, pass them along

Seems to me, going just by that info, DU & UMD Michigan are getting the most for their money with Michigan and PSU doing pretty good. Michigan is going to have to see how their coach does long term with his own recruits. This year is a pretty good sign he's up for the task. But I won't complain about the Gopher's situation. So far I think UMn's got the best coach and only have to pay him the 5th most. Sure I'm a little biased, but so far back to back Frozen Fours is already worthy of the 5th highest salary, easily. If he leads the Gophs to getting pummeled on Thursday, I may start having doubts, but a Natty will end any debate, for the time.

Leaman sitting on top at 800K per year?! Not a great ROI on that salary over the past 4 seasons with the Friars ranking 7th overall in conference play.

That's also an old number, he just signed a new contract this offseason when BC was interviewing him. He could be much higher now. He's done a good job leveraging other openings in the NHL and NCAA for new contracts and extensions

Anyone know if Penn State's figure is available? I remember that during the Paterno days, when Joesus sought to portray himself as some humble servant of the university who didn't make more money than a professor, the state legislature gave them some legal shield to prevent releasing his true salary. I'm guessing that's why there's no data for their hockey coach.

Penn State is super tight lipped on their coaching salaries unless they absolutely have to share them as one of the highest paid 25 employees. They’ve stated Gadowsky doesn’t fall under that category so they don’t share it. The only thing they’ve shared is he signed an extension a couple years ago only because they received so many questions about his contract status
