HELP! The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

That's the message I'm getting from my external drive which has images from my last 5 games including 3 senior nights. I've had the connection parts for western digital passports fail before so I pulled apart one whose drive had gone bad (wouldn't format) and switched the connection piece and I'm still getting the

Drive:is not accessible.

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

What can I try now? I simply have no money to send it in to a data rescue type shop. Windows XP.
