Happy Birthday Mr. Potato Head !

60 years ago, May 1, 1952, one of the most clever and innovative toys was introduced....since it was a 'make your own' design where you supplied the head and they gave you the accessories, so to speak!

I wonder if they can still sell it these days....it's not outlawed for being a choking hazard, is it?

I was disappointed when I saw that they started selling the head, some lump of cheap plastics with slots in it. Part of a disappointing trend in which the packaging becomes more important than the contents.

[aside: I bought one of the very first "Boggle" games ever to hit the market. It was wooden cubes in a flat tray with an egg-timer. No fancy shaker container, just a small cardboard box, white with a picture of the game and "Boggle" in red letters. Paid something like $1.29 for it. We still have it, 40 years later. I recall Dick Cavett one time talking about how he liked to make as many words as he could from the same collection of letters.]

Re: Happy Birthday Mr. Potato Head !

Back in 2000 Mr. Potato Head was celebrated in Rhode Island, the home of Hasbro Toys. Six foot tall Mr. Potato Heads were decorated by artists and appeared around the state. Some of those fun creations can be viewed in a slide show here: http://gonewengland.about.com/library/blpotsurfer.htm

Thank you for posting that link! I enjoyed the tour.

Edgar Allen Poe-tato, that was a good one! :)
