The patient, who was exposed to non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds, was over age 65 and had underlying medical conditions, officials said.

This part bothers me. But the underlying medical conditions is too vague to know what it could have been. Either way, a grim first milestone for something we've been warned about for at least 20 years now.

Exposed to non-commercial birds...that is rather vague and kind of a stretch trying to find out how he was exposed.
 
If this is the way humanity ends, so be it. It was an ok run.

A preprint published yesterday warns that the continued spread of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cattle gives the virus more opportunities to evolve and adapt, thereby increasing its zoonotic potential.
 
Sounds like it's primarily waterfowl and turkeys that are reservoirs of it. Song birds generally are not known reservoirs since they don't flock.
